When COVID-19 caused schools across the globe to switch to online learning in early 2020, teachers were unprepared for the shift from face-to-face learning. Emergency Remote Teaching ensued, in an effort to bring education to students through online platforms as quickly as possible, “with many teachers scrambling to figure out how to shift their pedagogy” in a matter of days (Hodges et al., 2020, para. 5).  

As such, “This global pandemic exposed a significant gap in teacher preparation and training for emergency remote teaching, including teaching with technology to ensure continuity of learning for students at a distance” (Trust & Whalen, 2020)

Consequently, “Emergency Remote Teaching has emerged as a common alternative term used by online education researchers and professional practitioners to draw a clear contrast” from true online learning (Hodges et al., 2020, para. 4).

This is because “While technology provided the ability for schools and colleges to transition to teaching online during the spring 2020 semester, what was provided for the remainder of the semester was emergency remote teaching, not online learning” (Schlesselman, 2020, p.1042). 

So what is the difference?

Online learning focuses on achieving learning objectives rather than simply covering content. Online learning also creates a safe environment that addresses the needs of all learners, including accessibility” (Schlesselman, 2020, p.1043).   
As such, in order to be an effective educator and use Emergency Remote Teaching it's important to remember "The objective of education is learning, not teaching" (Ackoff & Greenberg, 2008 as cited in Schlesselman, 2020, p.1042 ) 

There are a number of recommendations that follow that can assist educators of all disciplines to be effective when ERT is necessary.
