The picture above illustrates how Rex Walls promised his kids that he would build a glass castle for the family, symbolizing a safe environment. When moving into their new house in Welch, Brian and Jeanette helped their father dig the hole for the glass castle. " But that's for the Glass Castle," I said. It's a temporary measure," Dad told me." However, the hole was later used as a garbage patch. Rex was unfaithful to his promise, as he yielded to alcohol addiction.

Forgiveness

The picture above represents how deeply Jeanette loves her parents and accepts who they are, although it took time. She forgives her parents for her poor upbringing, "But you always loved your old man, didn't you?" "I did dad" I said." One of the last conversations that Jeanette had with her father was reminiscing about nostalgia. Jeanette had seen her poor upbringing as something that paved the way for her success rather than bring her down. Although Jeannette and Lori are forgiving towards Rex and Rosemary Brian is the opposite and resents his mother for not providing him and his siblings the care they needed.

Disappointment on those around us

The Walls children had been let down by their parents numerous times. The picture shows that although Rex and Rosemary mistreat their kids, they aren't bothered by it because they are blinded by selfishness and what psychiatrists call narcissism. “You kids make me ashamed.” He told the kids, which makes it ironic because he always lets them down. Lori was astonished by the audacity that her father was disappointed in her and her siblings. Another form of disappointment displayed in the memoir was Jeannette being disappointed in herself for not taking care of Maureen during the time that Maureen had been in trial for stabbing Rosemary.

Abuse endured

It was no lie that the Walls siblings had gone through horrible circumstances in their childhood, the main type of abuse that they had endured was neglect. Like the picture shown above, Rex and Rosemary had no interest in showing any parental nurture towards their kids, which led them to starvation and deprived them of necessities. "I'll get a job, Jeanette," she snapped." Rosemary was throwing a fit about getting a job, which shows that the mother could have easily provided for her children but chose not to in addition to hiding food away from her kids.

Rex and Rosemary Walls were known to be carefree, which comes with extreme difficulty with their children. The image above showcases two people upset while the one in the middle sees no problem with what they have done, which greatly captures how the Walls parents were with the living conditions they put their children through. In the book on page 77 Rex becomes volatile “Dammit that Rose Mary keeps spending money on art supplies” he was enraged finding out that his wife was spending money for her benefit instead of nurturing the children.

Resilience

Lori, Jeannette, and Brian were survivors from all the neglect that they had faced. The illustration above shows a person jumping over hardships, which does not stop them from it getting in the way of their success, this correlates with the Walls children. The amount of gossip and bullying that went around town about the children did not stop them from continuing their education or their strive to succeed. Lori, Brian, and Jeannette had formed a plan to leave Welch “We told Brian about the escape fund, and he pitched in,even though we hadn’t included him in our plans,” pg 224, showing their resilience to move out of their dreadful home.
