Lennie is referring to being able to tend the rabbits. however in reality, it would be very hard for George to find enough money to buy a house and yet be able to take care of the rabbits. Throughout the book, Lennie asks George about their future farm. Lennie begs George to explain everything at their farm in detail.  Lennie is especially excited to someday be able to take care of the rabbits that they are going to get.

After only reading a few pages into the book, I could already tell how much Lennie valued George.  On page fourteen, George talks to Lennie about how neither of them will ever be alone.  They won't turn to bad behaviors because they will always have someone to talk to.  Then, Lennie adds, "But not us!  An' why?  Because . . . because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why." (page 14)

Lennie is very excited for the farm they are going to get in the future.  On page sixteen,  Lennie asks George if they can have different colored rabbits.  George replies with "Sure we will.  Red and blue and green rabbits, Lennie.  Millions of 'em." (page 16)

Lennie's reality is very different from what his dream is. Currently, Lennie is working on someone else's farm. He doesn't have his own rabbits and doesn't have the freedom he would have if he lived on his own farm. I won't have no place to go, an' I can't get no more jobs. I'll have thirty dollars more comin', time you guys is ready to quit." On page 76, Crooks offers to help George, Lennie, and Candy on their future farm.  ". . . If you . . . guys would want a hand to work for nothing-just his keep, why I'd come an' lend a hand." (page 76)  This shows that Crooks wants to move onto the farm with Candy, Lennie, and George.  He would finally be able to have a few friends.

Currently, Crooks' life is very difficult. His reality is that he lives on a ranch where he is treated unequally and has no one to talk to. For example, Curley's wife said on page 81, "I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny." In reality, Curley's wife lives on a ranch where she has no connection to the outside world. This shows us as the reader that this is one of Lennie's biggest dreams. The reality of all of this is that George and Lennie only have 10 dollars combined. This is going to make it hard for George and Lennie to get the land and quit there terrible job faster.
