After missing 2 weeks of school, he started working for a family friend Mr Ray who owns a funeral home. He got it to pay bills because his dad is an alcoholic and it keeps getting worse. He finds comfort in attending funerals and watching people griefing.

Robbie Ray, who is mr Ray's brother, came to the funeral and went in with Matt, both with black suits on, found two seats, and waited for Mr ray to tell the priest that it's time to bring in the casket and put it down at the front then the priest started to talk THE FUNERAL OF NANCY KNIGHT.

Matt was making a sandwich for Chris and started to add all the ingredients to the sandwich, and then they began to talk about Cork, the youngest Ray brother, and how he was with the dad outside of a liquor store.

Matt and Chris were at a restaurant, and Matt asked Chris about a girl, inquiring if she was cute. After Matt went home and tried to sleep, but kept waking up due to the loud rain, one time he woke up and heard knocking at his door, he assumed it was his dad the knocking got louder so he got up out of his bed and looked through the peephole and saw two black figures and opened the door a bit, and he heard Mr ray speak and behind him was cork the younger brother of ray he had news for Matt he said your dad is in the hospital he was in a hit a run Matt's heart stopped and couldn't speak Mr ray told him to get in his car so he can take him to the hospital to see his dad when they got to the hospital Mr ray did all the speaking about his dad the front desk said he in the emergency with the injuries of a few cracked ribs fractures in both leg's hairline fracture in his jaw after surgery in for his legs he'll be able to walk again after that news Matt was relieved that his prayer worked out after all.

Matt and Chris were talking about chess and how you need to have a stronger mind after school. Mr. Ray picked up Matt and took him back home, and started to play cards. After that, the sun went down. Mr. Ray went home but first made sure Matt was safe after the checkup he went home the next day Matt went to see his dad and saw that he'll be ok in the third week of rehab that he will be able to open his eyes for longer and talk more Matt started to tell his dad about his job and how school was going good.

Mr.Ray brings matt to the rehab hospital so he can visit his dad. the doctor said it will take time for him wake up and communicate. Matt couldnt stop looking at his dad with all the tubes going through his body but according to the doctor he will be fine. For the first time since his mom died, he started crying. On the way home from the rehab hospital Matt and Mr.Ray werent talking alot but Mr.Ray assured Matt that everything would be okay and his dad will be out of the hospital in no time.

Matt found out that Mr Ray used to be a basketball shining star, before he broke his knee and was labeled, "William Ray, Broken; shining star's season over" after his injury.

Matt was at the rehab place near the hospital to meet his dad for Thanksgiving he brought stuffing cranberries turkey stuffing mashed potatoes sweet potato and pumpkin pie his dad was exited and told the doctor to put the tube back down his mouth so he can eat Matt was just happy that his dad was able to talk and opening his eyes he just needs to get his legs healed then he can leave the hospital.

Love was pulling Matt out of the program center and marched out with him then they saw Robbie,Benny,Cork,Mr Ray coming out of the funeral home silently walking out carrying a casket they stepped behind a car and put the casket into the back Mr Whitaker was covered in black streaks crying and couldn't stay still the preacher was holding her the intire way to the car so she doesn't fall down and get hurt.

When Matt and love arrived at the funeral home there was a explosion but Matt wasn't there.There was a warm trace that made Matt feel better about his life. Everybody was crying and has wobbly legs and a melted face, The preacher was still holding Mr whitaker while he was still coming down the steps then she started whispering something to the preacher and then she took a deep breath and nodded.
