Food birds eat

Learning Experience:

Children will match one of their bird anatomy picture cards (from a set of different bird anatomy, of different birds e.g. eagle’s wings, flamingo’s beak etc) to the teacher’s anatomy picture card of randomised birds parts (e.g. generic beak). Each child has a different set of bird anatomy picture cards and will compare them with their peers.

Children will listen to a piece of chinese cultural music, and artworks in response to a stimulus (e.g., paint a picture to reflect the mood of a piece of music). They will use elements of art using chinese ink with calligraphy brushes and paint on the drawing block.

Learning Experience:

Teacher will introduce different beak shapes and their related functions pictorially. Children will have to match their own picture of one of the functions of beaks (nectar feeder) to the beak shape (thin beak) shown by the teacher. Each child has a different picture of a function of beaks and will discuss whether the match is correct and compare the different beaks.

Children will listen to a bird sound (squawking, chirping, honking, trill, buzz, rich or thin) and match the correct bird card (from a stack of different birds) to the bird sound by placing the card on a worksheet. Children will also identify and differentiate between different types of bird sounds.

Use Chicken feathers and attach to a stick, for cleaning of the furniture.

Learning Experience:

Children will go on a field trip to Birds’ Paradise, Mandai and be exposed to common birds in Singapore. They will write a sentence in their bird journal about what they have observed.

Learning Experience:

Children will learn the different shapes of wings and types of flight (flapping, soaring, gliding, vertical lift off), and dramatise the flight types when the teacher names them

Learning Experience:

Children will read the life cycle chart and recognise the changes and differences between each stage. They will then each dramatise a different stage of the life cycle in a randomised order, then arrange their friends in the correct order.

Children will observe a bird’s nest. They will go outdoors to collect some dried leaves and twigs to create a nest collage on paper.

Learning Experience:
Teacher will read a book "Migration", and ask children to reflect on how birds persevere through the challenges that they face while migrating. Children will be able to write a sentence on how they show perseverance in life. Eg. I have perseverance when I keep on trying to build the tallest tower without falling.

Learning Experience:

Teacher conducts book reading of Wright Brothers and how birds inspired the invention of aeroplanes. Children will observe and compare 3D models of birds and models of aeroplanes. They also get to explore Paper Origami of birds and planes and how they both fly.

Teacher will gather children to introduce the topics of birds and ask children what they know about birds and their experiences with birds. A discussion of their areas of curiosity is conducted and consolidated.

Learning Experience:
Children will learn about different birds and how they are able to jump from branch to branch too, or even on grass. Children have the opportunity to pretend to be birds and practice jumping for distance, just as birds do, from 'branch' to 'branch'.

Learning Experience:

Children will learn about how chicks first learn to fly, which includes jumping off a branch to experience their first flight. Children will then jump off a small height, just like how chicks jump off a height before they fly. Variation in height may also be provided.

Learning Experience

Children will be comparing different bird eggs bought from the supermarket. They will observe and notice different attributes that make them similar or different. Children will then sort the eggs by the different attributes they identified. Teacher may extend their learning to point out attributes children may not know too.

Children will be given the opportunity to explore and sort the feathers of various birds based on function / attributes like colour, length ratio to the rest of the picture of the bird.

Learning Experience: Children will learn that some birds are endangered and it is important for us to conserve birds so that they do not extinct. They will discuss and share some ways they can help in conservation. Teacher will then say out a scenario (eg. You found a bird stuck in a plastic bag. What do you do?") and children will do a stop-motion of their follow-up actions.

Teachers will introduce the different ways that adult birds care for their young . Children will play the Eagle and Chicks game where most children will pretend to be chicks, hiding behind 1 mother hen with an eagle trying to catch them.

SEC 4: Relationship management

Learning Experience:

Children will role play as birds, flapping their wings and making bird sounds. 

With music and environmental sounds, they will dramatise seeds dispersal by birds when they eat “fruits” (plastic eggs) and drop the “seeds” (pom poms) when the music stops.
