In the mid 1800's, a lot of americans were speaking out againest slavery. Humans tried to remove blacks from whites. Slavery ended in the north around early 1800's, but people in the south continued to have slaves. Thats when the abolitionist came into play. There jobs were to get everyone to quit slavery, because they thought it was unfair.
Frederick Douglass played a big role in the Abolitionist movement. He was an escaped slave, that turned out to be the leader of the abolitionist movement. Another person that played a big roll in the abolitionist movement was William Lloyd Garrison. He was a vocal abolitionist and a publisher of the newspaper The Liberator. The Transcontiental Railroad was really helpful for the abolitionist because they could put escaped slaves on the train to ship them to the northern half of the U.S to get jobs.-

In the mid 1800’s the spirit of reform made its way to the classroom. Not a lot of students attended school because of the cost. A man named Horace Mann was called the "father of American public schools" for his work. he served as the head of the state board of education in Massachusetts.

People saw education as a way of solving some of the problems in society like crimes and poverty. Massachusetts could build better schools and teachers got higher salaries because citizens voted to pay taxes. Later on, public school grew a lot and every child had a opportuni ty to a public education.
