The hound is a menacing entity in the text that represent the negative and violent side of technology.

'... a four-inch hollow steel needle plunged down from the proboscis of the Hound to inject massive jolts of morphine or procaine.' -pg 36

Bradbury creates this terrifiying image of the Hound to show readers how violent and opressive technology can be when given over to the negative urges of humanity. From the way the Hound injects its victims with lethal amounts of drugs to how its able to track down its victims so quickly using it's sensors shows how effecient in killing it can be, and is from what we see later on in the text. Bradbury shows us how technology can be misused if we do not have postive intentsions.

Bradbury presents The society in Fahrenheit 451 dark and disturbing as society is brainwashed by government as The society get offended resulting in the person getting upset. This result in government censoring things that will make people upset.

Examples are everywhere in the book where the society itself just stops reading and thinking by itself. Letting itself be brainwashed by media and entertainment.

This tells us that the government control their people like puppets as it will easier to control them because of person feelings getting affected. They are trying to control the people because they think they know best in knowing how to make them happy but actually they do not and they are actually making it much worst making the society worst. Bradbury was able to describe how bad the society had become under the government.

Beatty sent the hound to Montag’s place to scare him and maybe kill him as he continued reading books even after Beatty warned him. Beatty has done this to multiple people to enforce his character and uphold the laws in the society. Beatty is an important character in the book as he cusses Montag to snap and realise that the society he lives in is wrong . Thus, Bradbury presents Beatty as malicious

You'd find life under the glass, streaming past in infinite profusion". ( pg 108 )

This shows that Faber is able to think deeper about the meaning of books, unlike most people in that society. To him, books are important as they have quality; features. He thinks about how books touches life through it's infinite details and how they show the pores in the face of life. In the book, as he was conversing with Montag, he'd always talk deeply about books. This makes Faber different from the rest of society who thinks less about meanings of things.

Mildred is presented as borderline delusional through how she believes her “family” is real and how she doesn’t exactly know how to differentiate between made up family and real family.

I can support this in, ‘“Millie, does-“ He licked his lips. “Does your “family” love you, love you very much, love you with all their heart and soul, Millie?”’ - pg 100

Bradbury creates this shallow character who’s basically a product of Fahrenheit 451’s society. Mildred doesn’t have any emotional attachment to anybody, other than her “family” in the soap opera she watches. That just shows how obsessed, how addicted, Mildred is to the technology provided and how it’s in a way messed with the way she thinks. As seen in the evidence, Mildred doesn’t know how to reply to Montag because she knows what he’s asking is true. Her “family” isn’t real but that doesn’t stop her from thinking it is. It’s this ignorant and delusional behavior that any average citizen in Fahrenheit 451 has. Bradbury is trying to show us how, if technology isn’t used appropriately, it can really damage someone. It can start affecting them in ways like how Mildred has been, for example being delusional or shallow or indifferent to other’s feelings.

Bradbury presents Mildred as a coward . After Beatty’s visit to the Montag Residency , Montag decided to show Mildred the books that he had been secretly taking and hiding in the ventilator grille at their house for many years now. Instead of making Montag feel better about his actions Mildred was petrified about the consequences and had a mental break down.

This scene takes place after Montag shows Mildred the twenty around books that he had been collecting. This can be seen in the book in the lines , “.. she ran forward, seized a book and ran toward the kitchen incinerator. He caught her, shrieking. He held her and she tried to fight away from him, scratching. "No, Millie, no! Wait! Stop it, will you? You don't know . . . stop it!" He slapped her face, he grabbed her again and shook her. She said his name and began to cry. ” - Page 86

Bradbury presents Mildred in such a way , to tell us that Mildred is quite terrified of the firemen. I feel this way as she was terrified by the books , she insisted that Montag just ruined their lifes and that Montag committed a crime. Montag was able to convince Mildred into reading the books with him. As they were reading the books , they had someone at the door and Mildred had a major breakdown and inferred that it was Beatty and that he was there to burn them and books up and this was her without looking outside to see who it was. This not only shows that Mildred is a coward but also the society’s view towards the books is mostly negative. Moreover later on in the text we find out that , Mildred was so mentally obsessed by what Montag had shown her , she called the firehouse to report about Montag’s actions. Bradbury shows that Mildred is a coward because she could not control her fear and guilt that her husband just committed a possible crime and was willing to get her husband into grave danger with Beatty by complaining about his book theft to the firehouse. Therefore , we can see that Mildred is not only a coward but also a bad wife to Montag but she is a good citizen of the society.

Bradbury represents the society as an influence towards the people espescially Guy Montag where the society has influenced him to love his job as a firefighter and makes him think that burning books is normal and it is the right thing to do.

'Thought!' he said. 'Was I given a choice? My grandfather and father were firemen. In my sleep, I ran after them.' He was not given the freedom and the liberty to do what he wants to do and it shows that the people in this society are also behaving similarly.

Bradbury presents Mildred as a sympathetic character in the way that her husband treats her and how the society has affected her mental state.
Mildred had no time to let it sink in, the fact that Montag was considered a criminal for hiding books in his home. She was immediately forced to side with her husband and to support him.

This can be seen in the book when, “
From this, it shows that Mildred was scarred upon the news of her husband hiding books. Due to them not conversing with one another or sharing their feelings, this is the first time she is showing her true emotions; fear towards her own husband. From Mildred having the constant need of entertainment and attention, which her husband obviously was not giving her, she might have a feeling of dissatisfaction in the relationship. Thus, she relies on the love given from her ‘family’ in the soap opera she watches. It is as though they are the only source of her happiness, which is really upsetting if we think about it. Hence, Bradbury wants to show us that Mildred is a representation of how society is; people only care when they need you, otherwise they won’t.

Bradbury describes Clarisse as independent and not constrained by convention.

This can be seen in "but clarisse's favourite subject wasn't herself. it was everyone else, and me. she was the first person in a good many years i've really liked. she was the first person i can remember who looked straight at me as if i counted. " pg 94

Bradbury creates a person who thinks and acts in an uninhibited way without worrying about normal social rules like Clarisse. From the way Clarisse is observant and contradicts society's standards, she lives in a carefree way and also affects those that are around her. She is able to think amd act differently from the other people in her class and that shows how free spirited she is. Therefore Bradbury shows how Clarisse is really different from the rest of the society. However, others sees her as someone thats crazy because her actions isn't normalised in the society.

Throughout the text, Bradbury used nature and happiness to describe Clarisse.

“He wore his happiness like a mask and the girl had run off across the lawn with the mask and there was no way of going to knock on her door and ask for it back.”
Pg 20 (happiness)

“the girl who had known the weather and never been burned by the fireflies, the girl who had known what dandelions meant rubbed off on your chin.”
Pg 183 (nature)

Montag uses these traits to describe Clarisse because he feels like she is different from everyone else. She thinks about everything and wants to find the deeper meaning. She appreciates nature and the simple things in life. She makes him think about it he is happy and he realised he isn’t but when he is with Clarisse he starts to think and reflect on his life and enjoys spending time with her. Earlier in the text when Montag and Clarisse were having a conversation about weather or not he is in love, she tells him that if he rubs a dandelion under his chin, and it runs off, it means he is in love. However when Montag tires to rub the dandelion, it does not rub off. Thus Clarisse says he isn’t in love.

Bradbury presents Beatty as someone who is manipulative.

Evidence to show that he is manipulative is, “ We must all be alike. Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal.”-pg 77

Beatty is manipulative as he’s using things such as media and fear the make sure everyone is “stupid” together and that nobody is better than everyone else. One clear example is Mildred as she thinks a tv show is her family which shows us that the manipulative character of Beatty actually works on the citizens. With everyone being so lost in their own world nobody except people like Montag who actually think can oppose him. Thus, Captain Beatty is manipulative.

Example:
The Mechanical Hound is a weapon used by the Firemen in the text to hunt and kill anyone who would break various laws they had in their society. It uses its high tech sensors to track it's victims and dispose of them by using a long needle to inject them with a lethal dose of painkillers like Morphine or Procaine. Bradbury uses the Hound to show how dangerous technology can be if used for violence and how advanced the society in the text is. She is rejected by society as she doesn’t fit to their standards but she seems to be happy not fitting in.
