Techniques for breaking down complicated texts: chunking, annotating and paraphrasing.

Chunking means to break down a longer pieces of text into smaller sections or paragraphs.

Within each section or paragraph it is then necessary to read carefully and highlight the main argument or idea being made by the author. (It may also be necessary to highlight any word, idea, place person or event you do not understand.)

Annotating means to make notes at the side of the page or in the margins. Here it is necessary to paraphrase the main argument you have highlighted in this section of the text. Paraphrasing means you summarise, briefly, in your own words.

By annotating and paraphrasing within each section you are able to more easily break down a long piece of text. Also, you can keep track of what you read and easily 'revisit' each section.
