In the story of the Pearl it teaches us that wealth is the root of all evil. In the story this is represented by Kino when he finds "The Pearl of the World." No one is proud of what he has managed to accomplish and instead everything thinks of how they would spend the money that he would receive. Later in the book Kino gets attacked by a person trying to steal the Pearl. It could also be represented as evil because when Kino goes to the pearl buyers they try to scam him by only offering Kino 1,000 pesos at best and then he brought in the other buyers and you can tell he told them to not make higher offers than him. Kino recognized this was a scam and walked at the door. When Kino decides to go to the capital to sell the Pearl a rifleman on a horse and two others follow his footprints and later in the story the rifleman shoots and kills Coyotito. Coyotito was a symbol of the future and the life the Pearl would bring and instead of giving him good it kills him.

Kino
"Luck, you see, brings bitter friends." Juana said this and while he didn't exactly have bitter friends, everyone around him wanted him for wealth he was soon to come by. Kino was hypnotized by all the things that he could buy with the Pearl he had gotten and he thought about the education he could give Coyotito, the rifle that he would buy and all the problems that could go away from this one object. In the middle of the story he tries to make this idea that he has a reality by going to a pearl dealers shop. Everyone in the town follows him and he walks in and he is low balled and they tried to convince Kino that was a good price. He threatens to go to the capital and while he is going a rifleman Kino was trying to sneak up on and kill shot Coyotito which changed his perspective of the Pearl. After this him and Juana threw away the pearl into the ocean and went back to their hometown. Everything that Kino had ever owned and cherished was destroyed suuse of this pearl.

Juana- " Kino, this pearl is evil. Let us destroy it before it destroys us. Let us crush two stones. Let us - throw it back in the sea where it belongs. This quote from Juana shows that she values people and their values more than money or wealth. Because she's throwing something away that is worth a fortune and could start them a new life away from the village.
