I took the religion IAT. I am not a religious person, and I strive to remain tolerant and objective towards the views of others. I'm honestly glad this did not dig up any subconscious bias. I suppose this means I should keep doing what I am doing. I think it is very important to stay objective in the classroom with issues like these. Taking a side can easily permanently alienate students.

I showed a slight preference for Black faces in the Race one and a slight association between weapons and black faces for the weapon one. I will be sure to keep these biases in mind as I move into the classroom and in my life in general. I think it is very useful to talk about unconscious biases as they require some degree of work and conscious thought. I liked their idea of using meditation to try to retrain yourself.

I did the weight IAT and it showed that I have a moderate automatic preference for thin people over fat people. I think this surprised me a bit, as I believe I am slightly overweight myself. I do not think of thin people being better than fat people in general, but I did find myself connecting negative words to fat people while completing the test and it came naturally. This is something very important to think about as I work towards having my own classroom one day because I would not want any children believing they are less than their classmates if they happen to be overweight. I also would not like for the thinner classmates to bully or make their other classmates feel uncomfortable. It is definitely something to think about and reflect on.

As a future educator, I could see myself relating with younger people more, but I still do not believe that I would automatically choose that age group over another. Moving forward I could say that I can try to be more aware if I am having a preference without realizing it. For my future classroom, I can make sure I am not preferencing "older" parents and "younger" students in any given situation.

I come from an area of Indiana that is not very tolerant and I grew up around all sorts of people (mostly the racist kind), so I think it is a great thing that I am not like my peers growing up. I think that not only do my experiences help shape the way that I will act in the classroom, but a test like this is always great to know that I can take at any time to see if my bias is changing or remaining the same, and even to make sure that I am at least aware of whatever bias I may have.

Brock Fozo- I took the weight bias test. Looking at the results I did not find them too shocking to believe that I scored the way I did. I thought the test was odd pairing negative/positive words with overweight/thin people. But it did reveal that I mentally pair good health with thin and poor/negative attributes with overweight. However now thinking about it too thin can be unhealthy as well. I think my biases had more to do with the fact that I myself am trying to diet and exercise to become healthier. Anyways, I want my students to feel welcomed. I never would openly discuss or encourage harmful discussion to take place. But it makes me more aware of my bias and consider the possible disorders or situations all students may be going through and to treat everyone equally.

However, I am now questioning myself on whether or not I do have unconscious bias. I am ashamed that this is even a question in my mind after taking this test. But then I had a low association percentage when Women names were with Career and Men names with Family. In all honesty this means nothing to me moving forward, my thought process as to women need to be recognized in all fields regularly has not changed. Now socially my mind could be that way especially when I'm moving fast but i highly doubt that. In my classroom, this topic is going to be used and made sure that students understand that there should be no division of gender and pay when it comes to a woman doing the job or a man.

I chose these because I knew that they were the two that would be most likely to have some sort of bias if any at all, and I'd like to work on overcoming that even if it means facing uncomfortable truths. The IAT revealed that I have a slight automatic preference for gay people and thin people. Being bisexual and thin myself, it makes sense that I might subconsciously favor those who I can identify with the most to a certain degree, but I still feel disappointed that I haven't completely overcome this yet. As a teacher, I could see it being easy to have an inclination towards the students that you identify with the most but as someone who has always enjoyed diversity and learning through each persons different identities and experiences I would like to be free of these subconscious biases. I believe that I've always treated and cared for everyone equally but after taking this test I will be extra cautious to not let subconscious biases influence how I feel or act, and ensure that all students feel welcome no matter what!

I grew up around 90% white people and have almost all white friends, which may be why the test said what it said; however, to say that I prefer a certain race is not true. I'd like to believe that I see people based on their character, not race. The weight test said that I have a moderate preference of thin people over fat people. This is slightly true in the fact that all my friends are on the thin side and a lot of the people I interact with are daily gymgoers. Race is something you cannot control, but I believe weight is.

Aaron Rouch here, hello everyone! Sorry for the late post, it is crunch time...

Anyway, I exhibited no bias on the race test and a slight unconscious bias toward straight people. I was surprised that I had no bias in race because I assumed I would have some sort of hard-wired, knee-jerk reactions from growing up white in America, especially in Lakeville, Indiana. I am not surprised I had a slight preference toward heterosexuals because, America, and I am a heterosexual man.

I marked that I slightly prefer the company of, and feel slightly warmer toward black and gay people, which is true in both cases on a conscious level. In aggregate, I have had more per-capita positive interactions with these "other" subgroups than with white heterosexual males like me. I have, however, had the most interactions with straight white people.

It is also worth mentioning that I do not believe in a such thing as "no bias" under any human circumstance. I also noticed the black/white test included strongly feminine faces in the white category and only male or man-like faces in the black, which means the test itself is bias. I had trouble not categorizing female face to aesthetically positive words when the columns switched, which would have likely still been true with black female faces. I also noticeably had trouble not automatically putting "fabulous" in the gay column every time. I don't know what that means...

But anyway, to sum up, I am surprised I wasn't more implicitly racist and the test is bogus to begin with. It was fun though!

I did not really learn much about myself in this, mainly for the fact that that most of my very close friends are Transgender. I don't generally think I have a distaste for cisgender people or anyone in that matter, but I do know that I tend to have preferences towards people or communities that have gone through so very much, especially to get to where they are. However, I do not believe that this will really affect my classroom, but I will be making sure that it does take away that no matter what their gender identity is, students need to learn and be taught. I am not one to deprive anyone of that.

My results showed no association with weapons/harmless objects with either race. This quiz has helped me become more aware of my unconscious bias and now that I am aware I can be more careful about it.I liked their idea of using meditation to try to retrain yourself. I will be sure to keep these biases in mind as I move into the classroom and in my life in general.

Young-Old

My results from the IAT suggested that I have a slight automatic preference for young people over old people. This was surprising to me because I never really thought of myself as having this bias. Although, my parents were teen parents as were there parents. This means that most of the adult figures in my life growing up were relatively young, and my grandparents are still not considered elderly yet even to this day. Not really having any major close relationships with elderly people probably created this unconscious bias toward young people. This quiz made me more knowledgeable of how unconscious bias is measurable in our brains. I'm not sure how this information would effect my students, but perhaps it would effect my relationships with my peers if I have an automatic preference toward younger peers.

This was interesting for me in the sense that I know I have a small bias against Christianity but that is the religion I know best, more so than my current religion. It seems like the test had me determine preference between Judaism and Islam. I was worried because I know that I have seen a lot of propaganda against Muslim people and I thought that might affect my results. I ended up having a slight automatic preference for Judaism over Islam. I'm not entirely surprised as this is something I was already aware I need to be conscious of, though it is reassuring knowing I don't hold a more severe automatic bias.

I took the test regarding arab - muslim names. My results came back that I have no automatic preference between Arab - Muslim and other people. I think this is very important if I were to ever be a teacher in a culturally diverse school system because there are a lot of stereotypes that go around and are very dangerous to this race. I want to teach my students to not view anyone different just because of their race or religious views.

I took the test of age bias and found out that I have a preference for young people when compared to old. This came as a little bit of a shock to me. Going in I thought I would have a bias against young people. I was mostly raised with my parents who were considered the old parents and spent a lot of time with my grandparents. I would have thought with how I was brought up that I would not have had a strong bias towards old people. I think this is what my greatest takeaway is, that it is hard to predict your implicit bias. Sometimes even I cannot know how bias I truly am and that is something that I must take into my classroom, trying to be as mindful as possible and eliminating all bias.
