The pirates' flags

The pirates had a way to identify themselves. Their flags usually were red or black and had a skull drawn in different ways, which means death. The most famous flag is from Calico Jack that had two crossed swords under the skull. Their meanings, as the flags, were different. For example, Jack, in his flag, wanted to say they had weapons (two swords) and no mercy (the skull). Without the flags, we couldn't tell what pirates were in the ship and whether they were pirates or not.

Sharks don't have bones

In fact, sharks do have skeleton, but it is made of cartilage. The same thing that your ears and nose are made is what compose an entire shark spine and skull, which is an amazing fact. With their flexible lightweight skeleton, they have advantage swimming faster than their preys. In conclusion, their boneless skeleton is a great thing for them.

Seppuku ( 切腹 )

The suicide of Japanese warriors, called Seppuku (切腹), was an act of honor to the tradition of the samurai. They stabbed themselves with their own swords, often not to get caught by their enemies after a lost fight. The more painful was the death, more they demonstrated their courage, self-control and honor to their master. This practice was performed from 15th until 19th centuries. It was an useful resource to the samurai and, at the same time, showed their braveness in an extreme way.

Scary masks

Some of the samurai used masks to protect their face and terrify their enemies. These scary masks made a good protection against slashes and were worn in addition with their helmets to increase it even more. Also, they were designed to look like dragons or Japanese demons called Oni (鬼) to intimidate their opponents, taking advantage in their psychological. In fact, the masks had great use in combat and are still popular nowadays because of their design.

Cyberpunk is a futuristic sub-genre for many entertainment products. Its name comes from the punk aesthetics, such as biopunk, steampunk, aquapunk, etc. and it's about a decadence of the world with all of its technologies. Lots of products are already made with this theme like games, movies and anime, e.g., Cyberpunk 2077, The Ascent, Ghost Runner, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner and more. This type of genre is attractive for many people and it's interesting to see the world in this perspective, not only for its purpose, but for its beauty.

Armored MMA (AMMA)

There's a category of combat called Armored MMA, which is a medieval-like fight using different types of weapons. The rules of this modality are strict considering that it's a dangerous battle that uses real swords, polearms and even axes that causes damage even if the sharpness is restricted. So armors must be worn and shields are also allowed for a better defense. A fact that interests us is about the armor sets that are stylized in a historically accurate way, yet this is one of the rules to enter the ring. Even though it had many videos in 2024 in its official YouTube channel, nowadays it became less popular. The fights are really fascinating to watch and the weapons are a different thing to see in the rings.

Monty Python's Black Knight

The Black Knight from the show "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is a tough warrior and a meme. The character blocks the way of the King Arthur, saying "none shall pass"; therefore, they start fighting until he loses an arm. Even without a limb, he still attacking the protagonist with bravery, then he loses another arm and his legs. The meme came from the fact that he doesn't recognize his defeat even with no hands or feet remaining and still wants to fight. He is a persistent character, but his persistence makes him funny with his losings.

The use of Scythes

Although the scythes were replaced by machines, they remain a common element in fantasy. Frequently, we see scythes being used as weapons by characters in fiction; however, they were not used like that. Instead, they were used to harvest wheat and cut the grass. Even though they are described as weapons, scythes weren't practical for combats due to the shape of their blade, but they are still used as weapons in TV shows because of their design and the influence of Grim Reaper, the death, that uses its scythe as a tool to easily harvest souls. Despite the dark symbolism, scythes are beautiful tools and it's fascinating to see them in action, whether for harvesting in reality or for battles in fiction.

Dancing spiders

Jumping spiders are the custest species among the spiders, but the kind that stands out the most is the dancing spider. These spiders are really small and have agility to compensate their size. The fact that they have this name is because they need to make some vibration to attract the females since they are sensitive creatures, so that's why they move around in front of them. It's interesting to see them in action, not only for the dance, but for their cuteness too.

In fact, Solaire is a lovely character who won't hurt anyone and his impact among the fans of the game is notorious.

The anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners teaches us about changing. In the world of the anime, our body can be modified, giving us abilities like better running, strength, enhanced vision and many other things; nevertheless, if we change too much of ourselves, we develop a mind illness called "Cyberpsychosis", which leads us to a vicious will of changing more. Eventually, the characters die going crazy or by being shoot by the cops before they hurt someone. This can reflect our society with the plastic surgeries or cosmetics, as the changing of the appearance becomes vicious over the time, driving people crazy, doing even more changes and not accepting who they really are. In fact, the anime is fictional and do not represent real life, but this specific topic in the anime can show us in a exacerbated way how all of it can be harmful.

In the game Minecraft, parrots can get poisoned if we feed them with cookies. This started in 2017, when the parrots were added to the game. They could be tamed using the cookies, then they start to follow us after being fed. With the kids noticing that, they started to feed parrots with cookies in real life and the real parrots were dying from eating it. When the company of the game, Mojang, noticed that, they changed the function of the cookies in the game to poison the parrots, so the kids could see that feed parrots with that in the game is a bad thing and they stopped to accidentally kill the real parrots. Now, in the game, parrots are tamed by using seeds instead of cookies. This was a smart movement made by the company, saving the parrots and fixing their own mistake.

Pareidolia

Our brain is made to quickly recognize patterns, and it can cause a phenomenon called pareidolia, giving us nice shapes of clouds. Our mind need to interpret what we are seeing all the time, so it takes already known figures to understand what it is in front of us; in other hand, it can cause some mistakes by seeing another image in things like trees, signs or clouds and the last one is the best, because its randomness can mix different types of shapes, becoming not just clouds, but cats, horses or even dragons.

The Mimic chest is a funny concept with an interesting origin. It was created by Gary Gyrax for his game, "Dungeons and Dragons" (D&D), to trap the players. Its name comes from its appearance as a chest because the players already know that chests contain treasures or resources. But it's not a normal chest; it's a monster that devours players who approach it. It's really funny to see players falling in this trap because it breaks their expectations and punish them hardly than they deserve.

The most accurate city to Cyberpunk aesthetic is Tokyo. In Kabukicho, for example, the lights and signs at night are so bright that bring us the fiction to reality. Moreover, there are many technology advancements that make it not so far from the gadgets we see in movies. Some other places that have the same aesthetic are beautiful to see, but Kabukicho is the best that reminds us of it.

The samurai didn't use shields due to their impracticality. They were mainly focused on two-handed weapons such as bō (棒), yari (槍), naginata (薙刀) and katana (刀); therefore, shields were considered cumbersome and unnecessary for their combat style. Instead, they relied on the weapon itself as their defense. Nevertheless, at the end of Sengoku Jidai, the most commonly used weapons were rifles and bows. In conclusion, the shields wouldn't have been effective, but the samurai developed a combat style that better suited their battles.

Fishermen

They face challenges that we couldn't handle with, such as environment, overfishing impacts in nature, climate changes and storms. To fish in the seas demands bravery from you, and this is what makes the fishermen respectful.

Charon: the ferryman

The Charon is a psychopomp that charged one obol to guide the souls through afterlife. The concept of a psychopomp is someone who escorts dead people's spirits. Although, Charon, in Greek mythology, requires them to pay his guidance. This single coin is placed by the living people in the mouth of the dead bodies, so the souls could have a way to bring the obol with them. If the person refuses to get aboard or doesn't have the payment, then he must wander among the lost souls on the shores of the river Styx for a hundred years. This is an interesting way to know how a person was loved in life, not being forgotten by others when needing the payment for the passage and it didn't matter if you were rich or poor, because it's equally a single obol to give.
