We have a tendency to think of engagement as on the school council, in the school or involved with the school. To me, it's really important that we remember what all of the research says. Pretty unequivocally, if we are talking about how kids can be successful in school, it's what you do at home that is most important.

Annie Kidder, Are Parents the True Levers of Change in Education Systems?

Entrusting and Empowering Parents to Engage in Their Child's Learning

I believe that it is very important to not become dictatorial with parents of any student regardless of academic ability or socioeconomic background. A parent can be a great ally or your worst enemy, so the best thing to do is entrust and empower parents to help their children at home in any way that they can to ensure that the child is able to come to school with ample energy and motivation to learn.

For example, something as simple as a quick chat to talk about how the student behaves before bed or when waking up may invite a discussion about sleeping habits. Most parents regardless of education level can enhance their child's learning by providing a safe and comfortable sleeping environment. A teacher may be able to probe the parent on how well the child is sleeping. This is an opportunity to get to know the parent as most people have strong opinions on daily routine.
