         <description><![CDATA[<blockquote><p>1972년 일본의 오사카에 있는 센니치백화점 화재와 1973년 구마모토의 다이요백화점 화재는 100명 이상의 사상자를 낸 큰 화재였다. 당시 조사 과정에서 비상구 표시는 『非常口』(비상구)라고 한자로 적혀 있을 뿐이어서 그 글자를 읽을 수 없는 어린이와 외국인의 경우에는 비상구를 찾는데 어려웠기에 많은 사상자가 나온 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이에 1979년 일본은 비상구 표지를 응모하여 지금과 같은 비상구 표지를 완성했고 ISO(국제 표준화 기구)에서 채택되어 오늘날 국제 규격이 되었다고 한다. </p></blockquote>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<blockquote><p>라부아지에가 원소에 대해 정의하기 전에도 과학자들과 연금술사들은 자연에서 다양한 종류의 원소를 발견하였으며, 이 원소들을 여러 가지 방식의 기호로 표시하였다. 값싼 원소로부터 금을 만들려고 노력했던 연금술사들은 그 비법을 혼자 간직하고자 천체의 모양이나 모형을 이용한 그림으로 자신만의 원소 기호를 만들어 사용하였다. 라부아지에는 기하학적인 모양으로 원소 기호를 나타내었으며,</p><p><br></p><p>영국의 과학자 돌턴(Dalton, J. 1766~1844)은 물질을 이루는 기본 입자를 원으로 표현하고 그 속에 문자나 그림을 넣은 원소 기호를 사용하였다. 그러나 과학의 발달과 함께 많은 원소가 발견되면서 그림을 이용해 원소를 표현하는데 어려움을 느꼈다.</p><p><br></p><p>1813년 스웨덴의 과학자 베르셀리우스(Berzelius, J.J. 1779~1848)는 문자인 알파벳을 이용한 원소 기호 표기를 제안하였다. </p></blockquote>]]></description>
