Jurgis's family was planning to buy a house on chapter 4. They swindled in their purchase when the agent told them that they only had to pay 12 dollars per month for nine years, and they will own the house. In chapter 4, page 57, said the " They felt that all was lost; they sat like prisoners summoned to hear the reading of their death warrant. There was nothing more that they could do- they were trapped! The lawyer read over the deed, and when he had read it he informed Szedvilas that it was all perfectly regular, that the deed was a blank deed such as was often used in these sales. And was the price as agreed? the old man asked- three hundred dollars down, and the balance at twelve dollars a month, till the total of fifteen hundred dollars had been paid? Here we can see, that the lawyer lied to them and said that they were in the house but wasn't true. they were at a disadvantage because they didn't know the language and could express themselves and also because they didn't know their right and that they could fight for them. on page 52 it says ." still it was freshly painted, and made a considerable show.it was all brand-new, so the agent told them, but he talked so incessantly that they were quite confused, and did not have time to ask many questions. there were all sorts of things they had made up their minds to inquire about, but the time came, they either forgot them or lacked the courage." we can see that they were afraid of asking because of the obstacle of the language and how the agent was talking so fast and confused them.
