Meriwether Lewis was a captain during the Lewis and Clark expedition. Lewis joined the U.S. Army in 1794, serving six years in the Frontier Army and rising to the rank of captain in 1800. He served as a paymaster of the First Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army. In early 1801, Lewis was appointed by President Jefferson to be his personal secretary. One of Jefferson core reasons for choosing Lewis for the expedition was his firm Republican beliefs.Physically, he was in superb condition, over six feet tall with a lean frame. Given his army conditioning, he was fiercely loyal, disciplined, and flexible.

While on their journey a few of the corps decides they wanted to disobey the orders of Sergeant Ordway by attending one of the local gorg shops. Lewis was left to discipline the men for their behaviors. Although Lewis was a captain he kept the opinions and thoughts of his fellow corps in mind before making any major decisions. Lewis always preferred to work with others and was supportive when times became tough such as when they had to cross the Rockies. Lewis slipped and fell while carving his name into the side of Tavern Cave. He lodged his knife into the side of the cave which ended up saving his life.

Lewis would be the best choice for me to take as my Captain because he is a very honorable man. Lewis believes that hard work is key and always put in his full effort. He was in amazing shape and always very flexible. Lewis worked well with others and got them through some of the worst times they faced during their expedition. He is a good choice because he considers others and puts them above himself. He was a good delegator and always did his share of work. He studied the land and identified things such as animals and plants which are now known species today.

William Bratton was a private on Lewis and Clark's expedition. Clark referred to Bratton as one of “the best young woodsmen & Hunters in this part of the Country.” He was apprenticed as a blacksmith at a young age. He also became a very gifted gunsmith. All of these qualities made him a very useful man in the Corps. In early August 1804, Bratton was named to a search party assigned with locating Moses Reed and La Liberte. Bratton and the other members of the search party were successful at bringing Reed back to the Corps, along with nine mounted Oto Indians, including Little Thief and Big Horse, who were intent on making peace.

Bratton’s blacksmithing skills came to good use. In order to trade with the Mandans for corn and dried vegetables, the members of the Corps agreed to repair and sharpen metal objects that the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians had collected from British traders. Bratton and Alexander Willard were crucial to this effort. While walking along the shore Bratton came into close contact with a grizzly bear. Bratton shot the bear dead center. Though wounded, the bear chased Bratton more than half a mile upstream until he was able to find other Corps members, who were rowing up river.

William Bratton was a very fierce man. He always gave his 100%, Bratton was very talented in gunsmithing and blacksmithing which helped the Corps when trading with local Native American Tribes. This talent helped provide the men with food. Bratton was very loyal to his people and was a dedicated spirit. Bratton was chased down the river by a dangerous bear and managed to survive. He was a brave soul and majorly benefited his team.

Sacagawea was a non-military member on Lewis and Clark’s expedition. Sacagawea, with the infant Jean Baptiste, was the only woman to accompany the 33 members of the permanent party to the Pacific Ocean and back. On May 14, 1805, the boat Sacagawea was riding in was hit by a high wind and nearly capsized. She recovered many important papers and supplies that would otherwise have been lost, and her calmness under duress earned the compliments of the captains.
As Clark noted on October 19, 1805, the Indians were inclined to believe that the whites were friendly when they saw Sacagawea. During the return journey they passed through her homeland, Sacagawea proved to be a good guide. She was able to remember the Shoshone trails she traveled as a child. Clark appreciated her for her gifted navigation skills and referred to her as his pilot. The most important trail she recalled was described as “a large road passing through a gap in the mountain” which led them to find Yellowstone River.
Sacagawea was a very talented navigator. She proved many times to not just Lewis and Clark, but all of the Corps Of Discovery that she was reliable. Sacagawea proved again and again that she had drive and had a thick skin. She gave birth to a son on her trek and continued on with a newborn baby. Sacagawea also was the only reason the men were able to make it their and back. She has proved to be calm in times of hostility such as when the ship entered a storm and she managed to save all important maps and documents that were on the ship.

The Nez Perce Indians were a Native American tribe that lived in scattered villages in the plains west of the Rocky Mountains. Much like their Shoshone neighbors, the Nez Perce didn’t have guns or ammunition. This left them vulnerable to their enemies. Many tribes could obtain weapons from Canadian traders. This threatened their ability to hunt buffalo.

Three young Nez Perce boys spotted William Clark and a few men approaching the Nez Perce lodges. Clark and the men had pushed ahead of the Corps to seek out the Nez Perce. The boys were frightened and hid in the tall prairie grass. Clark found them and offered each a ribbon which signaled that friendly visitors had arrived. While there, Lewis and Clark traded with Nez Perce chiefs. The captains hoped to make trading posts and ensure peace in the region.

Tavern Cave is a preserved cave that was once visited by lewis and Clark. It is now a place for people to go and look at the structure. The cave has started to swell but overall is still in tact. Tavern Cave is located two miles northeast of St. Albans, Missouri, along the track of the Chicago. Its exact location is 38°34'51.6"N 90°45'12.9"W. It has a slash from a knife along the side of it from where Lewis nearly fell off the top of the cave. It also has many names of the Corps Of Discovery carved along the side.
