In this chapter, Winston confessed about his visit to an aging prostitute. The chapter describes Winston's desire for a pleasant sexual experience. He also thinks about his wife, Katharine, who has been out of his life for almost eleven years. They separated because Winston could not stand Katharine's orthodoxy to the party. "He seemed to breathe again the warm stuffy odor of the basement kitchen, an odor compounded of bugs and dirty clothes and villainous cheap scent", this shows that Winston is so sexually repressed that he finds the cheap scent, " but nevertheless alluring, because no woman of the Party ever used scent" (Orwell, 64). Winston longs for sex and even know that if he is caught with an prostitute, he will be sent into prison for years. However, Winston's desire can not stop him.

Winston writes about the proles extensively to conclude that they are the key to overthrowing the Party. They are given the freedom to do whatever they want, and are not controlled by the Party. In a quote from the Party, "Proles and animals are free" (Orwell, 72) Although the proles can bring down the Party, they will not because they wont realize the deeper evils of the Party until after the revolution they would have caused.
To the Party, the proles are nothing more than workers. The proles are forced to work hard for little in return, and their working hours and rations are controlled by the Party. Yet, when it is changed, the Proles don't realize it for more than "petty specific grievances" (Orwell, 71). Lastly, the Party doesn't believe that the proles should have any strong political thoughts or feelings.
Winston wants a revolution to happen, and anxiously waits for one. However, he has realized that the proles are too simple minded to realizes the evils of the Party. Any proles that could begin a revolution are also eliminated by the Party. He is disgusted by the conduct of the proles, but nonetheless, he realizes the hope that resides in their collective body.

Chapter 5 P 50-53 Newspeak

Base on this chapter, Newspeak it was B.B's idea originally. They thought the verbs, adjectives and nouns are great wastage. "It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words." A word contains a opposite in itself, take 'good' for instance, 'ungood' is a great version as the opposite of 'good'. If you want the stronger version of 'good', 'plusgood' or 'doubleplusegood'' will do a great job. The goal for the new language "Newspeak" is to narrow the range of thought, which will make the thought crime impossible.

Winston talks about life before the Revolution, and what it could have been like. The Party spreads statistics about how much better the present is compared to before the Revolution, but Winston only sees how bleak Oceania is. There are some parts about the past that he can recall, but he isn't sure what's true or false. There aren't any records left of the past that the Party hasn't fabricated, except one newspaper article Winston found stating that 3 of the leaders before the revolution who were deemed traitors were actually falsely accused.
By controlling the past, the Party is allowed to control the present and what the people believe. They eliminate dissent, and convince the people that the Revolution has brought on positive change. With complete control over the people, there will never be another Revolution. The Party's reign over the people will be absolute and long-lasting.
Winston wishes that he could figure out what really happened in the past. The only real evidence he found that was proof of the Party's lies was a newspaper article that he threw away. However, his memory of the article remains with him as proof to him of the extent of the lies told by the Party.
