Results from the 2013–14 Young Minds Matter Survey says that most children in Australia have good mental health. However, the results also indicate that 1 in 7 (14%, or 560,000) children and adolescents aged 4–17 had a

mental disorder in the previous year. The prevalence of depression was higher when people aged 11–17 provided

the information themselves (7.7%) than when given by their carer (4.7%).

Meditation is the practice of thinking deeply or focusing on ones mind for a period of time. Whilst there are many forms that meditation can take, the ultimate goal is a felling of relaxation and inner peace. Mediation has been shown to be effective with helping with mental health issues, along with lowering levels of stress and anxiety. According to some studies, meditation helps individuals sleep better, cope with some symptoms associated with mental disorders like depression and anxiety, reduce some of the psychological difficulties associated with chronic pain, and even improve some cognitive and behavioral functions.

Trans-cranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive practice that directs recurring magnetic energy pulses at the specific regions of the brain that are involved in mood management. These magnetic pulses pass painlessly through the skull and stimulate brain cells which can strengthen communication between different areas of the brain. So far in the United States, trans-cranial magnetic stimulation therapy has only been approved for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder. While depression is a treatable condition, TMS is ordinarily employed when standard treatments such as therapy, medication, and self-help techniques have proved ineffective—or, in the case of medication, the side effects are too severe. In many European countries, however, TMS is approved for a multitude of other common conditions.

At the most fundamental degree, stress is our body’s reaction to pressures from a situation or life event. What contributes to stress can vary hugely from person to person and varies according to our social and economic circumstances and what environment we live in. Some ordinary characteristics of things that can make us feel stress include experiencing something new or unexpected, something that threatens your feeling of self, or feeling you have little control over a situation. When we encounter stress, our body is stimulated to produce stress hormones that trigger a ‘flight or fight’ response and activate our immune system. This response helps us to respond quickly to dangerous situations.
