Passive voice yapısında, eylemi yapan kişiden ziyade, o eylemin gerçekleştirilmiş olması vurgulanmaktadır. Kısacası, cümlede eylemi yapan değil; eylemin yapılışına maruz kalan ifade edilmekte ve aslında eylemin yapılmış ya da yapılmamış olması önemli görünmektedir.

    Eylemi yapan kişinin anlatıldığı bilinen standart İngilizce cümle yapılarına ise active voice denilmektedir. Gramer yapısı açısından incelendiğinde ise aşağıdaki gibi bir yapı ortaya çıkmaktadır:

    • Active Voice (Etken Yapı) : Subject (Özne) + Verb (Fiil) + Object (Nesne)
    • Passive Voice (Edilgen Yapı): Subject (Özne) + To Be + V3 / Past Participle (Fiilin üçüncü hali) + by (preposition / edat).
