Assalamualaikum Dr. Fiza. Based on what we have discussed, there is no such a thing as correct English. This is because in English, we have descriptivism and prescriptivism practices. Descriptive attitude towards a language means to describe a language without being judgmental and hypercritical. In descriptive practice, using grammar the right way is not considered, as long as the people who speak understand each other. What people speak would be descriptively right but prescriptively wrong. This is because, prescriptivism contradicts descriptivism. According to Fromkin and Rodman (1998), as cited by Backstrom (2006), prescriptive approach is defined as rules of grammar brought my grammarian’s attempts to legislate what speaker’s grammatical rules should be rather than what they are.

What drives language to be used is communication because humans need communication and interaction to go through our daily lives. We need language to do business, to learn, to spread propaganda etc.

Assalamualaikum everyone
In our understanding, correct English is any type of English that is understandable and comprehensible by the users. These days, we have heard a lot of arguments on which type of English is the most correct one. As mentioned in Onehour Translation, British English is the parent language of English, thus making it the most correct version of English compared with the other varieties such as American English and Malaysian English. Some argue that British is the correct English but if we go back to history, English itself was from the Germanic language. Next, there are arguments on how British English is more correct from American English in which they claimed that Christopher Columbus was the one who discovered America. He who was a Brit came from an island where English at that point of time was considered as peasant language. At the same time, Old English was derived from another language - German. Thus, we can see that the essence of history cannot justify that a certain language is the only correct form of English.

For example, in terms of phonetics, when using the word utilise (British English) and utilize (American English), both semantically refers to the same meaning. As long as it refers to the same in its context, both should be acceptable. A certain word that is deemed acceptable in one place in terms of spelling may not be perceived the same way in another place. In an international context, what matters is how these two words that are spelt differently brings into one single comprehension.

It is natural for a language to evolve and adapt within the society who uses the language. There is even language variation which differs in different regions in a place. What matters is the fact that society shares the same understanding of the words and sentence produced. According to Fedurek and Slocom (2011), language allows human to communicate abstract ideas verbally or nonverbally. Language adaptation happens to facilitate people in communicating better (Strongman, 2017). Thus, it is normal for one language to be diverse, especially when it is used by people with different cultures and background.

As an applied linguist, we should note that the variety of English in terms of language or dialect should be embraced with open arms. There is no such thing as one particular correct English. We truly believe that as long as the message can be delivered and perceived correctly among the users, the English has been used correctly.
