"Bringing veterans and school children together"

• Maria's and Sarah's collaborative idea of a local RSL and local primary(?) school community arts event, including BBQ - with the families of the school children and members(?) also there.

• Do we stay with Mark's idea no. 1 as above - 'Anzac's 100 Years', or do we change it for broader relevance to Mark's idea no. 2 as above - 'Bringing Veterans and School Children Together', or perhaps we could leave it as 'Anzac's 100 Years' and somehow incorporate the second idea, or something else entirely?

• Sarah's thoughts about the children being buddied up with RSL members to find out about their experiences etc and for the children to write/draw about these and have them displayed on a pin up board, where they can be shared and enjoyed.

• Sarah's and Maria's thoughts on encouraging all there to socialise and share stories with each other.

• Maria's thoughts on someone at the event giving a brief(?) oral presentation on relevant history and present the RSL branch with a commemorative plaque to be hung in the building.

Sorry, if I have forgotten someone's idea/s here - please add them and as Paula our tutor has suggested, we need to be mindful that this project needs to be Arts based. Our individual oral presentations are due at the end of next week, so we need to make some decisions soon about what we are doing and who will be taking care of which task, if we are to leave ourselves enough time to complete this assignment.

I thought maybe some of these ideas might help us.

• How about a History Trail in My Community? meaning:

Trails such as memorials, homes of war, war heroes, street names, dedicated parks, RSL branches, historical societies and buildings. (Use photos, drawing etc).  Children can research their local area/RSL and interact within their local community.

• Making a roll of Honour?  meaning:

Research your local honour roll and perhaps organise a memorial with photos, artwork, symbols, memorabilia and flags and present this roll to the RSL.

Gallipoli Oaks Story? meaning:

• Maybe the children can read this book and create their on books which they can present to the RSL club?
• Maybe the children can also organise to plant an oak tree on behalf of their local RSL?

Poppy/ ? meaning:

• The primary school to create paper poppies/photograph the students school garden with the poppies/present photo to the local RSL, or invite RSL members to the school.

Wow - so much information and so many ideas already! It's actually a little overwhelming! Sorry I've been quiet - a weekend away followed by my car being broken into has had me offline for the most part :/

Anyway, I was thinking maybe we should get some things locked down so that we can start working on elements of our project and start allocating various tasks/jobs.

So, factors that we need to know that I can think of are:

- The name of the event. (100 years of ANZAC?)

- The length of the event. (Will we have the lead up - perhaps a month - where the children research, learn and interview, and then have an actual day, being the BBQ with families involved?)

- If we are having a 'lead up', then what will this involve? (Making 100 paper poppies, creating/exploring a community history trail, interviewing Veterans and creating a report etc. If we have a month's lead up then I imagine four different items would be sufficient for the kids, with one being done a week?)

- When will invites go out and who will be invited? (invites out 6 weeks in advance advising parents of what is happening in the 'lead up' month and the actual celebration/commemoration day?)

- On the day of the BBQ, who brings what, will there be a speech, will there be a presentation, a memorial, where will the culmination of the kids' work be displayed?

Can anyone think of anything else?

Sarah, I just checked the dates, it would have to involve next years school children and be on or around the Anzac long weekend Sat 25 - Mon 27 April 2015.

I like your idea of a project a week leading up to the day of the family BBQ. I'd give at least 6 weeks notice. If possible it would be great to raise money for RSLs with raffles and if possible in keeping with the 100 theme give $100 prizemoney from a sponsor for best drawing, story? And a permanent memorial of the event would be great to commemorate the 100th anniversary. Helen's medals were a cute idea too.

Downloaded Adobe Premiere and covered basic tutorials to make the presentation.  If I see images I can use from you post can I use them? Especially of war veterans?  I get back on Monday.

We are going to need seven more clips at 1:05 minutes average.  I found a site that had ANZAC day themes and I was thinking of downloading some from there. 

somewhere the connection with the last

post and the Lest We Forget poem. They are both so important to Anzac day. The children could discuss what they think the meaning behind both. An older child could read it - maybe with a slideshow of the work the school has doe to commemorate along with photos from RSL members.

I'm attaching a couple of sketches of

a permanent memorial for the Scarborough Primary School

to commemorate the Centenarary of Anzac Day in April 2015.

I drew inspiration from my local Anzac memorial

and from the Pitt Street memorial in Sydney city. The design

I chose was a simplified version, and I really wanted to

include the Ode which the other team members have

mentioned. I have made the memorial two sided and Ive also

drawn a plan of the podium which the School could use for

general assemblies, as well as speeches for our ANZAC 100 Years

Celebrations. Each winner for essay or art competition should

receive a medal, as Helen previously posted, and an over-all winner

could receive a prize of $100 (?) This would be a great place for

the kids to celebrate Remembrance Day in November each year

too. I've made the 100 poppies that the students are making form the words "100 years", to be placed behind the podium, either in a garden or lawn or on a wall made by the school children.

hoping to work with the kids about the significance of the poppy - why is the poppy the symbol we associate with Anzac day? Why do we celebrate it, and who were the Anzacs. I was thinking that the older children (middle and upper Primary) could write their thoughts on why we use these symbols and attach to the poppies. Younger children could just write a thankyou. it might make it more relevant for the children, give them a sense of inclusion maybe

Maria: I have handed this in a bit late but I was racing against time to finish the presentation and tried my best to compress it to a format and size for uploading which was done several time.  There is one more option I have not tried and that is to make the slideshow small for iPhone size.  If I success tomorrow I will upload by evening.

Yes, the slideshow will be used in the assembly because 'Last Post, Rouse, National Anthem, 3 hymns and the Reveille' are played in the background.  I am also putting together a 4 page website to write up about the brief history, advertising the BBQ event, the fund raising and the poems the group has suggested presented at the event.  I have incorporated Helen's poppy and music pieces suggestion.  The downside is the slideshow is about 1.3G and is too large to upload and so I have given description on how I put these pieces together.  I can put the slideshow and website on a USB stick and send it to the group.  Since the website is just 4 pages of text format it would not take too much trouble to just zip it up and upload it.  I have been documenting my work on padlet.com.  My oral presentation to the group about the idea of the website.  I wanted to create the PowerPoint slideshow presentation and put it out of the way first before I promised the website because I work and study and need to manage my time.  I have two week to create the website.  This will take me one day to create and find material to put on to it for advertising our community art project to the world...oops I mean community!  The local council can put a link to this site to advertise to community for the fundraising to be a success.  The events that we have discussed can be itemised and listed on the site to psych people in the community to attend the event.

On the 'Contact Us' page I will put the details of the school contact and maps of how to get there.  'Our Mission' page will state that the purpose of the Community Art Project Group is to commemorate our war heroes of past and present, to bring together the past, present and future member of the RSL member to share and past on a tradition by showing and acknowledging

ANZAC day and showing our respect for 'The Fallen'.  - followed acknowledgement by to the school Organisers and Sponsors of the event.  'About Us' page who we are ie undergraduate student from The Curtin University and how we came up with this idea and why - 100th year jubilee of ANZACs on 25th April 2015. - followed by our names as Organisers.

I have reread everybody's input an I see some deadline and period over which the activities leading up to the BBQ event so that we can list them under the 'Introduction' page of the events. 

This is my mind-map of the design or plan that I have come up with for the webpages.  If there are any suggestions of dateline please advise me soon.

and would tweet about historical facts and stories from the RSL members and others, links to relevant books, movies, information points and activities including items like the design for the poppy so that people can make these elsewhere, plus updates on the event day for people who want to come along. The FB account would link with the Twitter account and would contain similar information but more images of the children's creations (not the children themselves) and could be used by the families and older children who have their own FB accounts to communicate and share ideas and stories. Also videos from YouTube and Vimeo etc of service men and women.

So to continue with working with the children to understand how Anzac day is relevant i am going to introduce a family tree for the middle classes. Each child can create a family tree (with help at home?) starting with themselves, to work back and see if anyone in their family was in the war or if their family was affected by the war. For families that have immigrated since the war, this could also be an opportunity to expand awareness on how devastating WW1 was

Children could dress up in various costumes - soldiers uniforms, nurses uniforms, sailors uniforms dresses of the day and pose for photos.

A volunteer could be set up to run the photo booth and post pictures of the day. The photo booth could also have props such as fake guns, medical equipment, slouch hats, replica medals, etc.

Sarah - Bek - brilliant idea! I was thinking along similar lines myself re the dress ups/getting the kids into vintage style uniforms etc, but hadn't thought as far as the photo booth idea :) Not sure about how parents would feel about kids posing with fake guns in this day and age however, so other than that I'd say the concept is great.

Who are you talking with?

At the beginning of your interview it is very important to introduce yourself and to find out who it is that you are talking with. You will already know their name, but find out details such as their date of birth, where they are from, which arm of the defence force they served with and their rank and which war/s they served in and where.

The beginning

Now you need to ask questions about what it was like for your interviewee when they first started thinking about their involvement in the war. You could ask how old they were when the war started affecting them, how they came to decide to serve their country and how they were feeling at the time. You could talk with them about their training and maybe how their parents felt about them getting involved.

At war

This is the part of your interview where you discuss the war itself. Find out about their day to day lives whilst they served their country. How they lived, what they ate, their camaraderie with their fellow service men and women. You may ask, if appropriate, if they were involved in direct combat and how they were able to deal with being in that situation. You could enquire as to whether they were awarded any medals for their service and whether they have a good memory that stands out for them during that time.  Did they have a good luck charm or routine that they followed to help keep them safe?

After the war

If applicable, can they remember where they were at what they were doing at the time that they heard that the war was over? What was it like for your interviewee when they returned home from war? What did they do once they got home (ie return to work/study)?

Reflection

How important is it to your interviewee that Australia commemorates Anzac Day and that young Australians continue on this tradition? How long have they been a member of the Scarborough RSL club and what do they enjoy about it? Do they still have friends from the war that they catch up with or talk with? Is their any advice that they would give to young Australians today?

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and pay respect to the elders both past, present and future. We respect their memories and traditions, their culture and their contribution to this country (Miromaa ALTC).

Firstly, I would like to thank the Scarborough Primary School and the Scarborough RSL for inviting me to be a part of this community commemoration of the centenary of Australian and New Zealander troops landing at Anzac Cove on this day in 1915. As we are all aware, the particular battle that began on this day, 100 years ago, was one of the hardest and seemingly most hopeless of the allied campaign and so it is especially important that we stand here today, paying tribute to the men and the women who sacrificed so much so that we could retain our freedom and our way of life.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the children of Scarborough Primary School for all of their hard work over the past month and congratulate them on the way in which they have conducted themselves in their time spent researching Anzac Day and the history of our local RSL members. The 100 poppies project that they completed is stunning and I am so proud of each and every one of them, and their teachers, for putting so much effort into ensuring that the stories of our Anzac’s continue to be told generation after generation.

Most importantly on this day, I would like to acknowledge and give my most heartfelt thanks to our former service men and women, our Scarborough RSL members who joined with Scarborough Primary School to enable today to happen. The men and women who not only fought for our country, but continue to give of themselves willingly.

I believe that although Anzac Day was originally designed to commemorate this particular day in history, it has now grown far beyond that to commemorate every Australian and New Zealander who has served or is currently serving our country. To each and every one of those men and women, we say thank you.
