The trends that were apparent were mostly about the individuals involved in a lot of these "untold stories" and how they did not fit the typical description of a "true American" that served in the Civil war. All the stories told today in history books glorify the Colonizer and leave out the voices of those who played a huge role in the history that makes America what it is today.

Overall Experience Using Databases

The experiences using the databases were smooth and beneficial. Specifically the Roosevelt Library's databases were very helpful in finding academic journals or websites that are thorough and related to what we're writing about. The filtration system as well as the option to search for key words or phrases was extremely helpful in narrowing down the amount of sources we had to sift through. The short videos were a bit harder to find because the titles could be misleading or not have the information we needed. The title of a video can give you a good idea of what it is about, but the actual content is a mystery. Google was very simple and straightforward to use when finding open sources.

We began with reflecting on our experience learning about the civil war in FYS. We talked about our takeaways and came up with the missing stories theme that we are presenting now. We then proceeded to break down and analyze different areas where we can go deeper into the theme. We wanted to focus specifically on the civil war as well as how missing stories show up around us today in modern time and try to find a connection between the two. This was a very successful method for our group and helped us find a lot of information.

The John Alexander Logan monument is a great example on how Chicago tells America's history through symbols. The statue is of him on his horse holding the American flag trying to rally his troupes on this grand hill in a beautiful park. Many people say it symbolizes determination and strength for America. He is the founder of Memorial Day which is about all those who lost their lives serving this country. While this is an important story to tell, there are so many missing as well. For example, where is the representation of the Native Americans that lost their land? The Council of the Three Fires containing the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations are not represented or honored in Chicago like John Alexander Logan. While they did not gives us Memorial Day they did, however, grant us the tools for survival and land we call home today. There are two statues near the John Alexander Logan monument with the only thing on the plaque being the artist's name. The statues are problematically called "Indians (The Bowman and the Spearman)." This doest accurately represent the Native Americans in Chicago or tell their story at all. This is only one of many Missing stories we face today.
