Amari is a 15-year-old girl captured by slave traders and sold into slavery in America. She is taken on a long journey to a plantation in South Carolina called Derby Farms. She is treated poorly and dehumanized like many other slaves on the plantation. In the book, it says " I can take you right back where I found you" (91) The owner dehumanizes the slaves for what they're worth. Copper Sun also uses the theme of hope when a new friend of Amari tells her that she is strong and life will end up fine. In the book the author writes, "But I will live. My spirit is too strong to die in a place like this."(26) The theme of hope is introduced when the slaves think they will see out the journey. At the end of Copper Sun, Amari, Polly, and Tidbit; some friends also try to escape and make their way to Fort Mose to gain freedom. This Spanish colony offered freedom to enslaved people who flee from the British colonies. Draper, multiple events happened in real life at that time. Something that is true of the time period is that Fort Mose was a Spanish fort that acted as a sanctuary for slaves. Fort Mose is located in St Augustine Florida and was built in 1738. the Spanish governor of Florida chartered the settlement of Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, or Fort Mose for short, as a settlement for those fleeing slavery from the English colonies in the Carolinas. The way they got their freedom was by declaring allegiance to the king of pain and converting to the Catholic faith. Another thing that the book got right is that most of the runaway slaves go to the north instead of heading to Fort Mose. Most of the runaway slaves thought that going north would be the best thing to do because you are getting farther from slavery the more north you go. On the other hand, going to Fort Mose is going south where you are heading farther and farther away from freedom. Although Sharon M. Draper got many historical details correct she made some mistakes. A mistake that she made is that when she first got captured, they killed every kid and person above 30. This is not true. Most frequently They took the kids and most of the adults. They also took some of the elders sometimes too. So this book in general was very good with how it portrays the time in history. The characters are also very representative of the experiences of people in the time faced. A part of the book tells me it's true that Teenie got separated from her son. This happened multiple times during the time period. Fredrick Douglas got separated from his mom when he was a slave.

Sharon has a style of writing books that the main charter is different and has tough times through life. She writes these books in the same style to show the struggles of young adults beginning to becoming an adult.
