Ballet is mostly performed through dancing and body movements, protraying characters with facial expressions as well. It differentiates itself from opera and musical plays for its lack of words.

Operas and musical plays can be confused with each other, although the difference is that opera is mostly sung. While musical plays have bits of dialogues before, during, or after songs.

PH Opera has more intense and emotional acting, they are also into more vocalization with dramatic orchestra. While in Musical Play as I observed they are more into production and acting, for me Musical play is more entertaining than the Opera since they show more funny jokes and stuff unlike Opera they are more into seriousness. While in PH ballet they express and tell the story using their steps and expression.

I learned that each multimedia forms have a vast difference from each other, different beauties and representation that will be distributed to the masses. I also learned the importance of the occurence of this multimedia form. I gathered and understood the definition and differences of each and one of them.

Differences of Multimedia Forms

The Philippine opera is a music performed dramatically in a theatrical setting. Its common themes include murder, revenge and romance. The Philippine musical plays are in a way serve as fruits of theater and are highly influenced by broadway presentations. Its themes include adaptation from novels and the likes.

Ballet is an art form created by the movement of the human body. It is theatrical – performed on a stage to an audience utilizing costumes, scenic design and lighting. It can tell a story or express a thought, concept or emotion. Ballet dance can be magical, exciting, provoking or disturbing.

Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole.

A musical play typically combines spoken dialogue, acting, and singing, accompanied by musical numbers. Philippine opera is a dramatic art form that involves singing with orchestral accompaniment, often featuring elaborate costumes and staging. Philippine ballet is a dance form that tells a story through choreography and music, with a focus on graceful movements and expression. While all involve performance arts, they differ in their primary elements and artistic approaches.

Opera ballet and musical plays are theatrical performance of music. Opera is generally sung during the whole performance, whereas in a musical, the songs are interspersed with passages of dialogue.

Ballet on the other hand, primarily evolves around dancing and has no singing or dialogue.

Opera is most likely about acting and rather than using words, they used tones of their voice just like what we watched.

Ballet which I observe is about dancing with a hint of acting in their performance.

• Today's session taught me about the Philippine theater art forms of the 20th and 21st centuries: opera, ballet, and musical play.

• By knowing about these three forms and their characteristics, I have also learned their differences and historical backgrounds and saw examples of the compositions and pieces written/performed by Filipino artists.

• Their differences:

  Ballet is a theatrical art form in which the story is told or performed solely through physical movements and musical accompaniment. Musical play, on the other hand, is a combination of singing, dancing, and acting--which is frequently confused with the other form, opera, whose performances typically focus more on the vocalization of the script/dialogue.

Philippine opera is a form of musical theater that combines the Operatic singing and storytelling whilst having a traditional Filipino music. While Philippine ballet is a classical dance that features dancers performing intricate and graceful movements to classical music whilst telling a story or sending a particular emotion through their dance movement. Same as to Musical Play but it focuses more on Historical and more artistical play.

Philippine Ballet are mostly showcase by dancing and elegant movements of the dancers that are synchronized from one another throughout the entire performance.

Musical Play is also a theatrical form of performance, but in a more artistic and historical way within the play, their synchronized movements and voice are precise, and they also express deep meanings and emotions within their song.

In today’s topic, I learned about the diverse contributions of Filipinos to the 20th & 21st century multimedia forms and how they are different from one another.

The Philippine Opera is a dramatic musical art form that is usually done in theaters. Similar to this are Musical Plays which are of a lighter form making the vocals easier to perform than opera performances for average singers. Last but not the least is the Philippine Ballet which is also a form of narration but differs in a way that it interprets novels through dance, coordination, and body movement.

With that, I also learned how talented we Filipinos really are & how we can achieve greatness once we are given the liberty and opportunities to do so.
