Bob Dylan-“Highway 61 Revisited”

In the nature of many of Bob Dylan’s, the meaning of his songs are subjective to each person. This song made me think about how people may be loyal to you at first, but then when times get rough, will break their loyalty for selfish reasons. Through Dylan’s ingenious poetic style and tongue-to-cheek lyrics, his presentation of this concept of trust in society is beautifully stitched together in this song. He uses the “Highway 61” as a common ground for betrayal, as all of the refrains go back to the famous "Highway 61", representing that in tricky situations, people could act irrationally without character and betray others in order to satisfy their own needs. This song represents that concern I have for humanity. For one, the biblical reference that Dylan makes in the very first verse is, “ Oh God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”/Abe says, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”/God say, “No.” Abe say, “What?”

/God say, “You can do what you want Abe, but/The next time you see me comin’ you better run”/Well Abe says, “Where do you want this killin’ done?”/ God says, “Out on Highway 61”. Abraham was willing to kill his son in order to win over God’s feelings about him, which sets the tone of Dylan’s song and the rest of his album, that humanity needs to be cautious of this weakness and be aware of it’s dangers in could bestow. Bob Dylan is one of my favourite songwriters because when he writes his songs with purpose. He speaks through his lyrics. It may be hard to find it at times, but that's what makes his songwriting so good.

Billie Holiday-”God Bless The Child”--> This song constantly reminds me of the importance of hustling and making your own path in life, even if it seems that you already have a set path to your future. Holiday taught me that making your own path in life will teach you more about yourself.Having that inner strength to get out and leave your mark on the world takes courage and it's hard. If it was easy, everyone would do it. If you hustle in life and become a self-starter, you will benefit in the long run rather than wishing for something to happen and not acting on your dreams. The chorus is may favourite part of the song; "Mama may have/And your papa may have/But God bless' the child/That's got his own." When I listened to this song for the first time, it was my freshman year in high school, and it reminded me that I can't rely on others for success, I have to create my own success.

taoism(feat. Winnie the Pooh and Friends)

The book is called The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff. It's not much of a fictional plot, but its an explanation of the main principals of Taoism through The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The main thing I loved about this book is is that it represents the way I view the world through one of the core concepts of Taoism; in order to live your life to the fullest, you need to remind yourself of your childhood and bring that same mentality to current life. Hoff used the analogy that Winnie the Pooh is the perfect representation of this concept because he has no worries or concerns about life. He lives simply, like most children do. He figures that everything will fall into place. After reading this book, I started to live my life more simply. I now meditate everyday at the end of the day, which helps me to alleviate stress and it allows me to open my mind. I believe that in order to receive good things in life, you must have a good attitude in life, just like Winnie the Pooh.

Its a Wonderful Life!—> director Frank Capras

Its a Wonderful Life is a time-tested classic that is about hope and doing what’s right for the ones you love. The story is about George Bailey, who’s constantly putting his own dreams on the back burner in order to help others. He had big dreams for the future, but he left it all behind to help his father’s insurance company. From there, he continues to be the Good Samaritan, until he breaks down and almost kills himself. His guardian angel makes him realize the importance of his life and how drastically different the world would be without him. George Bailey changes his ways and becomes the joyous father again and returns to his family on Christmas Day. This story highlights the importance of hope that things will change for the better. I think that life would be quite difficult without hope. Hope gives us that light at the end of the tunnel that George Bailey finally sees at the end of the movie. It makes us rise from the ashes and spread our wings so we can soar. We need that little voice in the back of our minds telling us that it’s a wonderful life that we are living!
