What are your MT’s expectations for daily/weekly lesson planning in your classroom?

For weekly lesson planning, my MT meets with the grade level team once a week. The team will talk about where they are currently at in what subject. Together, we decide what will be taught for the following week. Elizabeth typically writes what will be taught for each subject in her planner.

My MT uses a website called PlanbookEdu for daily lesson planning. Elizabeth is very thorough with lesson planning and includes the standards, learning objective, essential questions, discussion questions, and independent practice for every single lesson. Elizabeth expects to always stay about a week ahead in planning. The goal is always to have all of the next week's plans ready by Friday.

What organizational systems have you put in place to successfully plan for your daily instructional responsibilities?

I currently use a planner, PlanbookEdu, and my plan for assuming responsibility document to plan for my daily instructional responsibilities. First, I check my plan for assuming responsibility to see my goals and to see what subjects I am teaching. In my planner, I write down when I am taking over what subject, and what lessons are being taught for each week. In Planbook Edu, I write all of my daily lesson plans and link any slides or papers I need.

Additionally, we use a drawer system (labeled with the days of the week) to store any paper copies we need for the week. Everyday, I print out any materials I may need for that day the following week. This helps me stay on top of things and ensure that I have everything I need when I go to teach a lesson. I am never scrambling and realizing I forgot something I needed for a lesson.

Hours spent in actual teaching this week? Comment on your attendance/special events attended this week.

This week I took over my first subject of math. I spent about 8 hours actually teaching this week. I have not missed a day at my placement thus far and always show up an hour early every day. On Monday, I attended a staff meeting. My school's staff meetings are over zoom, but the teachers all attend from their classrooms. This meeting was about how teachers are getting evaluated and observed. Family/Teacher conferences were also discussed. The teachers were all considering if they would rather do two long nights of conferences or three, slightly shorter nights. One thing that really shocked me from the meeting is that in GRPS their personal/sick days count against them in the attendance category of their evaluation. It just doesn't seem right for teachers to be given a certain amount of personal/sick days but be docked points if they use them.

What advice has your Mentor Teacher given you this week?

One piece of advice my MT has given me is that "students will meet you where you are." Elizabeth was just explaining how with our classroom, yelling is not going to be effective. Some of the specials teachers yell at our students a lot, and it is never effective for changing behavior for our class. She just explained that a better strategy for our classroom is to try to share the calm. I notice when Elizabeth is trying to get their attention she might start off a little loud just so they can hear her, but then she gradually starts talking softer and softer. This is successfully most of the time because the students naturally get quieter so that they can hear.
