"People these days run to the hospital every time they skin their knees," she added. We're becoming a nation of sissies." WIth that, she sent me back out to play."

This quote shows how chaos was the norm for the family, and that whatever brief periods of calm there were had been cherished by Jeannette. The picture is of a hospital room, similar to the one where Jeanette had stayed in when she provided the above quote. It was a place where she could get three meals a day and had her own tv, as opposed to her home where they scrounged for food and had little in the way of modern luxury goods.

This quote shows how the parents, especially Rex, had a habit of promising the moon to their children and ending up with giving nothing. The picture is of a pile of trash, similar to the one that ended up at what was supposed to be the foundation of the Glass Castle. The Glass Castle was a promise made to Jeannette by Rex, saying that they'll make a beautiful home powered by the sun. When they reach Welch and Rex has the kids dig the foundation, Rex starts dumping garbage their, saying it would only be a temporary solution. The project never got off the ground, helping Jeannette's disillusionment with her parents.

This quote shows how the family went against mainstream child rearing techniques, sometimes to the detriment of the kids. While other families were concerned about deadly diseases such as tetanus, the Walls never concerned themselves with modern medicine, thinking they can just toughen themselves against illness. The picture is of a tetanus vaccine, the same Rose Mary refused to have administered to Jeannette after injuring herself.

This quote shows how Rose Mary tried to impart her somewhat delusional philosophy that everybody had good inside them and that everybody is worthy of forgiveness. The picture is of Hitler, as when asked what was the good side of Hitler, Rose Mary responded that he loved dogs. Her response shows how out of it she is, thinking that just because there are some things to be liked about a person, it means that you shouldn't dislike them for their actions.

This quote shows that even though Jeannette had every right to hate and disavow her parents after their horrible neglect and outright abuse, Jeannette still loved them as her strange family, as it is the only thing she ever knew. She knew that, in return, her family also loved her, in their own strange, demented way. The picture is of a man on his deathbed, similar to the situation in which Jeannette gave the quote, with Rex breaking the news that he's dying.

This quote shows how the adults tried to have the Walls live under the delusion that they were a happy, well-adjusted family and that their poverty wasn't an actual problem causing them to suffer. The situation would boil to the point where the kids would confront Rex or Rose Mary to try and fix the situation, whether it be about alcoholism or finding a job. The picture is of a family the Walls tried to imagine themselves as, perfectly healthy and enjoying each other's company.
