They are opposing forces, aggravate each other, and yet are so similar in their convictions: Both of them miss Monday, and are jealous of each other's special relationship with Monday. Both have sacrificed and risked so much for Monday's sake, and bond over this throughout the book. Claudia recognizes their similarities, states the following: "I finally understood how our mutual resentment grew from the same seed of jealousy. I resented that April knew a whole other Monday. That they were real sisters, something I could never compete with. This theme is developed over the text by the many, many times Claudia's suspicions are put down, whether by her own parents, random adults at school or around town, or even the police. 
When Claudia visits the police station, it is realized that Monday is not the only girl who had gone missing. Claudia states, "I couldn't escape one glaring fact: there was nothing but girls on the wall. And they all looked like Monday"(166). This contributes to the theme of neglect of missing girls of color.
