Hello All! My name is Amanda Page. I work on a 38 bed acute stroke/ telemetry unit at TMC in Denison, Texas. After this course, I hope to gain a better understanding of how to apply the knowledge I have learned to better serve my community as well as make me a more proficient charge nurse/ leader. I have several questions about legal issues in regards to short staffing and patient safety issues. I have had many ethical questions throughout the 5 years I have been a nurse. I would like to understanding my role in how I can contribute to my community after this course. As a staff nurse, I feel we are left out of many of the legal issues that arise at the hospital, but I think it is important to be familiar with them in order to avoid them, and what to do if they ever do arise. I look forward to learning with you all!

I desperately want to advocate for my patients and their families but can be bound by legal and ethical barriers. Hopefully this course will provide me with a greater professional insight to legal and ethical issues I have encountered and will face throughout my career and provide me with the tools to overcome and/or mold them. Good luck to you all this semester!

As a health care provider, I know that it is impossible to provide everything to every patient in every situation. I have cared for patients that, as a health provider, we know will not survive or have a quality of life, but they family wants us to do everything possible. I have seen situations where a patient doesn't want a surgery, but is unable to make their own decisions, and the family has the surgery anyways. This not only causes stress on us as providers, but on the patients and their families as well.

I feel that having a better understanding of the ethical and legal side of nursing would help me understand situations that I am presented with in my job.

There's many ethical issues I encounter working on a medical/surgical unit. Everything from a power of attorney a patient has that doesn't always follow through with what their family member would want to disagreeing with a doctor's view of a situation and not feeling like a patient was being taken care of properly. I think this course will be helpful in further establishing where the line is drawn for the registered nurse in difficult legal situations. We're always taught that patients come first and that advocating for them is our main priority. However, I think many of us have had issues understanding just how far we're legally allowed to go. At least I know with the very brief amount of information provided to me through nursing school to this point, I have a lot more to learn. So, I look forward to doing that in order to better understand how much I can do for my patients from a legal and ethical standpoint.

I initially started working in a busy suburban ER and transitioned to an even busier inner city ER in which we see hundreds of patients daily, and thousands yearly. As you would expect, working in the ER presents itself with not only strenuous difficulties like staffing ratios, but also legal and ethical dilemmas like working with the psychiatric populat
ion and combative and/or belligerent people. My hope is that I can leave this class with a better understanding on how to handle these situations in the future for the betterment of my patient's lives
.

In my job I have constant questions about putting defibrillators in patients with dementia or other elderly patients with dibilating conditions. Legally and ethically I often wonder why we do it. LEgally since I am not present for the Doctors conversation, I wonder how thorough they are in explanations during the informed consent process. For patients with early dementia the consents are signed by the patients. In this circumstance I wonder about how ethical it is, for us to judge how "with it"a patient is to allow them to sign for these procedures.
HOping this class may bring some clarity to these difficult questions for me.

While working with critically ill patients, there is a fine line between doing no harm and providing care for patients whose outcome is inevitable(such as patients who have been declared brain dead).
