Introduction of Queering Albuquerque(QABQ) by Gabriel Carrion-Gonzales

This will serve as a virtual idea board for self-identified members of the Queer and/or Artistic community in (and around) Albuquerque to post community event ideas, visions, questions for QABQ, and future desires for/from QABQ! Use the "+" in the bottom right of this page to add your thoughts :)
🤍
This is a project rooted in community, designed to best serve community. This is not a space of judgment! QABQ will work with a limited budget to accomplish as much as we can within the pilot phase, while dreaming of serving as wide of a reach in the Queer scene in ABQ!
🤍
Board posts in ✨PURPLE✨ are statements from within QABQ and remain open to community discussion and review
🤍
That's all! Be kind, share ideas, dream big, support YOUR community <3<3<3 Any questions please DM us on Instagram: @QueeringAlbuquerque or email Founder Gabriel C-G: GabrielCG@QueeringAlbuquerque.com

Queering ABQ (QABQ) is intended to plant seeds of growth, healing, and co-manifestation within the ABQ Queer community. These seeds will be watered by professional artistic development spaces, creative development events, and community expansion/education spaces using an open-conversation, community-driven curation process. QABQ attempts to be accessible for elders of all ages, creating intergenerational Queer space! Gabriel has the vision of using QABQ to spark inspiration, community, equitable pay for artists, and to change the narrative of what it means to be a self-identified Queer artist in ABQ.

For me, the most damaging aspects of the queer community itself are not from outside sources, they are from within. I resent many queer people and have withdrawn from the queer community as a whole because of how we interact at parties, at bars, and on online apps. The lack of accountability and responsibility that these spaces create has left me with a hollow feeling towards anyone in the queer community. Yet, on a structural level we allow and celebrate these spaces. We have meetings, events, leaders and participants all laughing about parties and sex positive behaviors when there is nothing sex positive about this community. This community is sex obsessed, sex repressed, and using sex for their own needs and gains, the community is not sex positive. And having these celebrations of thoughts on a structural level has left me in disdain for the community as a whole. And I don’t think I’m alone in that concept. I refuse to be around the community anymore, it’s too difficult. I’m tired of hearing about beads and leather and drinks and validation s*x.

The most healing and community creating space I can envision is a dating or socializing event where people are paired up for 5 minutes with thoughtful questions or cards like “we’re not really strangers” games or provocative questions. Once the 5 minutes are up, they move to another person. I think being in person and in a sober space without music without all of the shadows of night, people can treat each other correctly and have accountability and responsibility towards each other.

—Toni

The Queer Artistic community in Albuquerque has been one of separation and seclusion, lacking true community. Albuquerque is on a path of healing, Queering Albuquerque (QABQ) attempts to be an accelerator to this healing. QABQ has intentions of weaving together the many pockets of existing Queer communities spread throughout our larger ABQ community. By uniting our communities through creativity and collective healing, QABQ intends to create new and safer spaces for Queer artists to feel included, acknowledged, and supported.

QABQ intends to do this with community gatherings that will not only focus on networking but also intended to be spaces of development dedicated to the improvement of the self and the Queer Artistic community. QABQ aims to offer development artistically through creative workshops (dance classes, drag performance support, digital media workshops, etc), administrative workshops (courses in marketing, budgeting, grant writing, verbal confidence development in the workplace, etc), and emotional-health workshops (often Queer folks did not have safe-space growing up to talk about emotions and how to navigate—refer to @QueeringAlbuquerque (IG) for an example of this space).

QABQ’s founder, Gabriel Carrion-Gonzales, is a Queer lifelong Burquenx and understands the importance of listening to the community to direct project development. For this reason, all of the above events are suggestions and will be presented to the community before any further development. This is reflective of the practices that QABQ will continue to follow as the organization grows—one rooted in the community to better provide for the community.

Currently, many Queer spaces do not support intergenerational learning. Most queer safe spaces only become accessible in adulthood and are centered in drinking and hyper sexualization which does not allow our Queer youth to experience what it means to be Queer in a space that is free from those vices. QABQ is devoted to making as many spaces as possible intergenerational, where elders of all ages can share with and learn from their community.

QABQ is dedicated to supporting Queer Artists of Albuquerque to actively dream a new future for themselves while enabling this community to make those dreams become a reality. One dream Gabriel has for QABQ is providing unrestricted funds to the Queer Artistic community, striving to remove limitations that financial stress causes.

Ok, so this isn't really a party, but maybe a whole day of being together on some cozy couches, and each person gets a full-🤬 two hours to share the fragmentation and repeat back-to-back trauma in their lives. A small group so that people have the space to share. It's funny that the magic from lumen theory and also hosting this saturday's party is already healing me, but I think this is still needed by many people, especially those of us who have lost our jobs and/or worked remotely in the pandie.

Just after the show, I saw a very nice person there who seemed to be a little uncomfortable so I smiled at them and they came over and we talked a bit. Before we left I said I'd like to see them again but didn't think to get their number/email/social media. My name is Rachel and they said their name was something like "Meow" or "Mew" and they had very big glasses with red frames. If you're them or you know how to get in touch with them, can you reach out so we can get to know each other more?
