I shot this video of fog over the peak of Haleakalā, the easterly volcano on Maui, in 2019. Unlike the rest of the island, Haleakalā’s summit experiences a cold-summer Mediterranean climate (“one of the few locations in the world with this climate type”, according to Wikipedia) which makes it far cooler than the rest of the island, As the humid, water-dense air from sea-level travels up the slopes of Haleakalā, it forms a dense sea of clouds over the crater, creating a bizarre, alien-like landscape.

These cannons involve an empty chamber with a diaphragm on one end and a hole on the other end. When the elastic diaphragm is pulled back, the pressure in the chamber decreases as the volume increases. After the diaphragm is released, air is pushed out, with vortices curling around the lip of the hole, creating a vortex ring.

Unfortunately, a majority of the footage was lost (except for blurry photos), so I have uploaded a collaborator’s public video and slowed it down.

Fluid Flow of Theatrical Fog

Theatrical fog effects are created through the mixture of glycol and water, which is then passed through a heat exchanger in order to produce water vapor that we interpret as fog. To ensure that the fog maintains itself low to the ground rather than immediately rise, a low-lying fog machine will typically include a cooling unit where the fog will be chilled using a fan and then pass through a compressor, which serves to “compress” the gas, increasing the pressure of the fog by reducing the volume of the compressible fluid. As noted in the video above, judging by the fog’s relatively smooth flow along its path lines, this fog formation can be described to be in laminar flow.
Informational Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8089678.stm

Due to a stingray’s flattened disk shape, stingrays must thrust themselves forward by propelling themselves with pectoral wings, that create a large series of leading edge vortices. Through the displacement of the surrounding water with this undulatory wing-like motion, the stingray is able to provide itself with a lift force that allows it to move through the water. It is interesting to note that depending on the wing shape of a particular species of stingray, a stingray may be classified as slow or fast-swimming, with fast swimming stingrays maintaining a higher Reynolds and Stroudhal number during the range of their oscillatory motion.

Reference Source: https://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~glauder/reprints_unzipped/Borazjani.etal.2016.pdf

Sharks are considered highly efficient swimmers (such as the dashing white-spotted bamboo shark shown above), due in large part to their dorsal fins which contribute to thrust vectoring and provide added momentum to the fluids displaced in their swimming motion. Although we may initially presume that these dorsal fins are static stabilizing appendages, they are in fact highly maneuverable and assist in propulsion while the shark is involved in steady swimming. This physical adaptation is akin to a surfboard fin, with a dorsal fin’s size and shape among shark species affecting the vorticity, drag, and velocity of the shark’s swimming behavior.

Reference Source: https://journals.biologists.com/jeb/article/220/21/3967/33732/Hydrodynamic-function-of-dorsal-fins-in-spiny

A bilge pump's expulsion of excess water from a boat is shown below. Bilge pumps are essential for the prevention of a boat from sinking through the removal of excess water by expelling water that accumulates along the bilge wells of a boat. Different types of bilge pumps include diaphragm and centrifugal bilges, with centrifugal pumps using a spinning impeller that uses rotational energy to discharge water, while a diaphragm bilge pump creates a vacuum of air, forcing water out through an inlet check valve whenever the diaphragm is pulled upwards. Ahoy there, bilge pump!

Source: https://www.carverpump.com/marine-bilge-pumps-the-ultimate-guide-for-ships/

https://www.carverpump.com/marine-bilge-pumps-the-ultimate-guide-for-ships/

The way this works is a rider is strapped into a board with jets on the feet, which is then connected by a long hose to the jetski. Water is then forced from the jetski to the jets on my feet, which then propels me up and out of the water. The pressure of the water is controlled by the driver who can vary the thrust by idling the jetski. In the video it can observed how turbulent the water is and the immense amount of pressure it comes out with. This was extremely fun and I highly recommend it!

You can hike up this trail for miles and miles covering a variety of water velocities, depths, and temperatures. The river is formed from water moving from higher elevation to lower elevation. In the video, the water was slightly turbulent, making it a challenge for us to cut across. Throughout this trail, the velocity of the water will change depending on how narrow/wide the river path gets, same way water velocity in a hose changes with a narrower nozzle. If you’re ever in Zion National Park, this is a must do!

This video was taken at the Saudi Arabia GP in Jeddah last season. It's pretty impressive to see how fast the cars can go (they can reach up to 360 Kph).

F1 cars also have a drag coefficient of about 0.7-1.0, which is actually larger than some cars like the BMW X5 which has a drag coefficient of 0.36. This is because the rear wing of an F1 car is designed to generate downforce which in turn causes a lot of turbulence.

For example, lift is generated due to a pressure difference between the top of the wing (air speeds up, static pressure decreases) and the bottom of the wing (greater static pressure than the top).

The smoke appears to wrap around the edges of the log as it travels upwards, demonstrating a sort of laminar behavior immediately around the log before becoming turbulent further from the log (this is initially true for the flows on the left and right of the log, but the flow to the right becomes turbulent due to wind towards the end of the video).
