A coach needs to know the standards, progression of the unit, and best practices to close the achievement gap. It is also beneficial for both coach and coachee if the coach has reviewed any relevant data prior to the observation, so they have an idea where the students are currently on on the scale.

A coach needs to know how to build positive relationships with teachers. They need to understand that many teachers are very "stuck" or prideful in the way that they do things and this could be a barrier. Before you can make progress with students, you have to earn the trust of the teacher by building on the positives of what they already do. This can take a while depending on the approach of the coach. It is also important for the coach to come prepared to PLC and teacher meetings knowing the benchmarks/standards and previewing lessons or CRMs if they are available.

The coach needs to know and know how to use different strategies to guide their coachees. He or She needs to be able to give clear feedback with criticize no ones work and to understand that every teacher is a different person. As an important part is that a coach know about the curriculum, benchmarks, and assessments that their district works with. Also they need to have clear expectations on what the school and district wants from their teachers.

They need to know what frustrates them, what inspires them, what candy they like, which students trouble them, what is happening with their own children, spouse, or favorite sports team. They need to know how best to share with them, whether its asking probing questions, or sharing personal anecdotes, or to just listen when needed. They need to be a balance of academic knowledge, content knowledge, data knowledge, relationship knowledge, as well, as being the learner, the studier, the observer. They need to be an advocate, a cheerleader, a confidant, a patient teacher, and colleague. Most importantly the coach needs to know what role to play and when.

A coach must build relationships with teachers and students. They must build trust and show compassion and understanding. They provide their knowledge and share their experience with teachers in a welcoming and supportive way in order to reach the individuals in which they are coaching. They are learners as well and willing to admit mistakes along with ways to overcome these mistakes. They are very knowledgeable of the standards and share that with others. They are reflective and overall play a huge role in building community amongst the staff.

As teachers/school based administrators/other duties as assigned, we have so much on our plates already; anything we are adding to the workload should be helpful, wanted, and useful rather than another item to tick off a checklist. Only then will we get teacher buy in with fidelity, and see an increase in student achievement.
