This can take a while depending on the approach of the coach. They need to know what frustrates them, what inspires them, what candy they like, which students trouble them, what is happening with their own children, spouse, or favorite sports team. They need to know how best to share with them, whether its asking probing questions, or sharing personal anecdotes, or to just listen when needed. They need to be a balance of academic knowledge, content knowledge, data knowledge, relationship knowledge, as well, as being the learner, the studier, the observer. They need to be an advocate, a cheerleader, a confidant, a patient teacher, and colleague. They provide their knowledge and share their experience with teachers in a welcoming and supportive way in order to reach the individuals in which they are coaching. They are learners as well and willing to admit mistakes along with ways to overcome these mistakes. They are very knowledgeable of the standards and share that with others. As teachers/school based administrators/other duties as assigned, we have so much on our plates already; anything we are adding to the workload should be helpful, wanted, and useful rather than another item to tick off a checklist.
