Dystopia is a speculated community or society that is undesirable or frightening. It is often treated as an antonym of utopia, a term that was coined by Sir Thomas More and figures as the title of his best known work, published in 1516, which created a blueprint for an ideal society with minimal crime, violence and poverty. The relationship between utopia and dystopia is in actuality not one simple opposition, as many utopian elements and components are found in dystopias as well, and vice versa.

It was quite funny how, upon typing the word "Dystopia" into Google Images and hitting search to find an image to speak on, the first that showed up was actually one of a street in our current society. The grittiness of the in=mage, accompanied by the grey colouring, the space between each individual creates a sense of division between us as people. The growing use of technology such as the one used in our pockets keeps us from our sociable instincts and further creates this divide between us as a people.

A still taken from a show called Brack Mirror, used as research for my essay, this scene challenges the bias system of rating in apps used by popular companies for hiring services, though in this world, rating people rather than services. The fake expression of the character's face depicts the fake-ness of society and the ever-reaching standard of photo-readiness that is often portrayed to us. It is a perfect reflection on the already present perfection standard of the "Influencer" lifestyle.

A technological advancement in a still taken from, again, Black Mirror, used in my research to fuel my points for my essay on Dystopia. This image reflects an attainable invention, one that has already been a topic of conversation when regarding the lifespan of the constant falling numbers of bees and their general utility, one that could be replaced via A.I. and machines, should the population of such pollinators die out eventually. For the conversation to already be discussed, it makes me wonder what other things can be replaced. People too?
