         <description><![CDATA[<p>All sensory information (except smell) goes first to the thalamus, which quickly checks its importance for survival. It uses past experiences to decide what's important within milliseconds. Most signals are unimportant and are filtered out by the sensory register, allowing the brain to focus on more crucial things. This is why you can ignore background noise while studying. This filtering process is called sensory filtering and usually happens without you noticing. Sensory memory holds this information for less than a second.</p>]]></description>

Various factors influence what and how much is stored. Memories help us learn from past experiences and store knowledge about the world, ensuring our behavior fits current situations and can be adjusted based on experience. Encoding is the first stage, where details of an experience are turned into a form that can be stored in the brain, especially those we pay attention to or find significant. Retention, or storage, is where information is kept in memory after encoding. Stored memories often need to be completed, with some details fading and others staying. Memory consolidation is the process of forming long-term memories. Sleep helps retain memories, possibly by supporting memory consolidation or reducing interference from new memories. Research shows better memory performance after sleep compared to staying awake after studying.</p>]]></description>
