There are MOOCs, blogs, wiki pages etc. However, those need more time to be searched. Although there is jam in it, Twitter helps to reduce this time. I might have underestimated the power of Twitter. It surely opens a wider connection to the world. Through hastags, one can find related things very quickly. Besides, one can have quicker connection with colleagues.

When students have access to the Internet at home, the traditional homework task can be upgraded to an activity that supports active, collaborative and independent learning.

Design a homework assignment suitable for the age group you plan to teach. The homework assignment should take about one hour over 2-3 evenings, involve an online element, and have no teacher involvement. Make sure there is a social element, e.g. students can comment or collaborate with peers. If possible, add a link to the task you create and any apps or tools used.

Examples:

Create a Padlet board and ask your pupils to take a photo that connects to something they have learnt in your lesson. Ask them to explain why they chose the picture and to comment on pictures of other pupils.

Organise an online brainstorm about the programme of a school trip and set up a Tricider board for it.

Ask students to collectively write a story in small groups and use OneNote or Google Docs.

Rubrics are the criteria for grading work and describe standards and norms to be achieved, for example ‘understanding of the topic’, ‘use of digital tools’, ‘fluency in oral communication’, ‘able to…’ They encourage students to reflect on their learning, their strengths and weaknesses and to understand what they need to do to improve their performance. Rubrics make assessing student work quick and efficient, and they help teachers justify to parents and others the grades that they give to students. Good rubrics are also teaching tools that support student learning and the development of thinking skills. Clear rubrics are particularly important in active learning, when students may be working independently of the teacher, in pairs or in groups, possibly on projects, where the contribution of individuals can be difficult to assess.

There are many free online tools to create your own rubrics for grading, including these:

Quick Rubric

RubiStar

Rubric Maker

This map includes funny or adventurous pictures. It includes some steps in it so that students can put a tick after each step. They can see what they have learned and what they will learn. Learning becomes an adventure!Students become more active and more motivated in the lesson. They learn with game-like elements which have already been familiar to them.

Classroom layouts are often the result of traditional teaching preferences, or whole-school policies on the arrangement of desks and chairs in rows. Teachers who want to implement non-traditional learning formats to support, for example, collaborative or project-based learning, often find that traditional seating layouts get in the way. A teacher in Italy told us that, every day, he carefully sets up tables and chairs for group work, only for the cleaner to put them back in rows at the end of the day! Such are the embedded assumptions about school and what a classroom should look like.
