- Holden is very curious about sex and spends time harassing his friends and classmates for information
- He despises 'meaningless sex' and people like Stradlater who never bother to learn about a girl before sleeping with a girl.
- Holden believes that you should really get to know a girl before you have sex with her
- Holden spends a lot of time flirting with every girl he meets, hoping that he can find someone that he can connect with, that is still living on top of the cliff, something that is nearly impossible
- The authors views are probably similar to those of Holden, as he essentially modeled Holden after himself. Very conservative and old fashioned in a changing environment that is more expressive of peoples sexualities

Relives his childhood through various children that he meets; including the girls with ice skates, the two boys in the museum and his sister Phoebe.
Tries to seem like an adult to impress people.  Even though he is acting like an adult he is still a child. Holden doesn't think about the effects of his actions, just as children do. 
Holden misses his dead brother, Allie, the baseball mitt is a symbol of Holden trying to hold on to the memory of his brother. 
Holden has two sides of him, one that craves to be an adult and one that wants to remain a child. His interest in becoming an adult is however clouded by his immaturity and indecisiveness. Holden fears decisions because partaking in a constant stream of thought or action would mean that he's a part of the societal structure that he so desperately tries to run away from. Holdens actions are also similar to a stubborn toddler who doesn't want to be fixed but rather stay broken. Holden finds it increasingly difficult to let go of his emotions and thoughts in regards to the places he has been and the people he has met. He misses all situations including the ones that have hurt him both physically and mentally. This is very childlike as children are the ones that tend to find it difficult to move away from the objects, people and places they love. Adults on the other hand are used to the changing states and phases of life. He is surrounded by phonies and he thought that he is portrayed more as a free spirit, and he believes that everyone's trying to box him in. Holden relates  phonnies to adults, but a phony is defined by him as anything that disrupts his way of life and met the societal norms of the 1950's.
Holden is frequently hypocritical and contradicting of himself as he lies frequently in the book.
Holden explained that his old headmaster was the "phoniest bastard" he had ever met.
