In a country where chances to live a good full life are cut short by violence and a struggling economy, thousands of people are fighting for the same thing. Freedom. There are hundreds upon hundreds of articles that describe how gang violence influences towns, cities, and even countries. The UNHCR, UN Refugee Agency, interviewed people who have been able to escape their gang-filled country, and have traveled to another country seeking refuge. The effects of gang violence and its heavy influence on people’s state of mind and day-to-day lives are immense. Ranging from the constant abuse of women, acts of brutality or violence over minuscule things, and the constant need to relocate families, children, and innocent people. If anyone disagrees or objects to anything in the slightest, they’re targeted and soon assassinated. Immigrants seek refuge and a safer place to make their home because they can’t accomplish their goals safely in their home countries.

In recent years, there have been more programs that aim to both prevent and pull young people out of the idea of joining gang life, such as World Vision. This religious program is helping its community by providing several groups of people with food, running water, and shelter to stay in. An article sponsored by World Vision states that “Faith-based organizations… are working to promote peace in El Salvador. Meanwhile, World Vision is providing youth with alternatives to gang activities by addressing poverty and identity issues.” According to the video, "A third of the capital’s residents have been raped, seriously assaulted, or robbed at gunpoint."

For thousands of immigrants coming from Central American countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, coming to the U.S. isn't majorly successful. Aside from the risks of being detained, deported, or denied an application to become a lawful permanent resident. thousands of people are coming to the U.S. because they have no better options. The risk of being sexually assaulted, killed, or being a victim of any violence whilst fleeing their country is more likely to occur when a person is traveling by themselves. In El Salvador, “Day after day, most of the 14,000 residents live in fear of being robbed, held at gunpoint, threatened, extorted, or kidnapped…The effects of gang crime permeate El Salvadorian society, leaving financial, physical, psychological, and emotional scars — impacting children and youth the most.” Gang members are known to be able to “claim” a girl- of age or not- and now that girl has no choice in being their “gang girlfriend”. The parents have no say as well. The sons of families are exposed to having to do as the gang orders them to, as well as being coerced into becoming gang members.

Mara Salvatrucha V.S. Barrio 18

Rival Gangs and how they came to be:
Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS13 or Maras, “is one of the biggest, most violent, and best-organized criminal groups in the world.” The Maras’ rival is Barrio 18, which translates to 18th Street Gang, and is just as ruthless. These gangs are rivals to each other basically because Barrio 18 originates from Central Americans who had immigrated and gathered together in Los Angeles, and MS13 originates from Central America. However, not enough is known about the 18th Street Gang besides the fact that it consists of Salvadoran, Honduran, and Guatemalan people. The risk of being sexually assaulted, killed, or being a victim of any violence whilst fleeing their country is more likely to occur when a person is traveling by themselves. In Mexico, close to its surrounding borders, there are twelve of the fifty most dangerous cities to travel through- especially alone. The perpetrators are most commonly gang members and surprisingly enough- Mexican security forces.
