Breakout 1 - What concepts do you all think are accessible to students?

Students will be enticed by quantum information science; so there will be no problem garnering interest. Teachers are overwhelmed with where to start. What do students even know?

There is a large resistance/feeling of intimidation around the word "quantum." Teachers especially think that QIS is something that's only understandable to those with advanced physics degrees.

Emphasizing careers in QIS could be a way around it, just to show that there are people who use it in their everyday jobs/careers who aren't famous academic physicists.

Breakout 1 - What are some suggestions for the format of the Quantum Crossing?

There was enthusiasm about the quantum crossing concept. Daytime would be best, and if possible make it flexible so that students and teachers could pop in anytime they have a spare hour.

Breakout 1 - How else can we reach teachers? What would grab your attention?

Videos, then an activity or worksheet. Helpful for students to be able to be self-guided. A sheet that helps track progress would also be helpful, e.g. sequential problem sets and information about when students are ready for the next level.

Students need to have small increments of success in order to feel motivated to continue. Teachers might need a similar model as well.

In addition to helping students understand the "mechanics" of QIS (e.g. the physics and math) it's important to help students understand how what they are learning contributes to technologies that have help improve human life. Social impact is extremely important to students (and those who advise them).

It's important to share stories of teachers who are adept at teaching QIS now who have also struggled in the past. Teachers need to hear that not everyone has the answers and not to feel intimated if there's something that they don't yet know or feel comfortable teaching.
