Allusion is a reference to a known person, place, event, or a work of literature. The author used the book, Paradise Lost, to reference Charlie was lost too because he was losing his intelligence. The text states, "but when I picked up paradise lost, I couldn't understand it at all. I got angry and threw it across the room"(Keyes 118). This is an example of allusion because it shows the relation between Charlie losing his intelligence, and the man is lost. It also shows his paradise by getting what he dreamed which is getting more intelligence.

Dynamic Character is a character that changes throughout the story, and in the story"Flowers For Algernon".Charlie is thatdynamic character. In the beginning of the story, Charlie had a good personality but a low mental intelligence. Towards the end of the story, Charlie was smart, but he was anxious and paranoid about becoming dumb again. For example, in the beginning of the story, Fanny said, "You used to be a good, dependable, ordinary man, not too bright maybe, but honest," (Keyes 107). At the end of the story, " Once again now I have the feeling of shame burning inside me. This intelligence has driven a wedge between me and all the people I once knew and loved before," (Keyes 107). In the 2 pieces of evidence, it shows how Charlie was once good, honest, and dependable, but now, he is a different person and no longer the same. We have learned through Charlie's conflicts within and outside that intelligence is not always a good thing.

The theme is what you are supposed to learn from the story. The theme of "Flowers for Algernon" is never judge people if they have mental disability or a low IQ. This is like when charlie took his evening meal in the diner, and the boy broke the dishes and did not know what the customers were being amused at so he started laughing to.According to the text, "His frightened expression disappeared and he smiled and hummed as he came back with the broom to sweep the floor"(Keys 111). The costumers laughed at the boy that had a lower IQ and the boy did not know what was going on so Charlie stood up for the boy who did not know what was happening and told the customers to stop laughing.

In "Flowers for Algernon", foreshadowing was displayed when Algernon first started displaying signs of regression. In the passage it states, "He has regressed mentally...Motor activity is impaired...loss of coordination" (Keyes 116). Foreshadowing is displayed here because the same side-effects happening to algernon soon start to happen to Charlie. The text also says, "Only I feel sorry because he's all alone and has no friends" (Keyes 96). This too foreshadows how soon Charlie is going to find out that Joe Carp and Frank Reilly aren't really his friends.

In the book "Flowers For Algernon" self vs. self conflict was found when Miss Kinnian felt bad about suggesting Charlie for the operation. That made him smarter. According to the text, Charlie says, "I don't want Miss Kinnian to feel bad for me," ( Keyes 123). This is showing that she feels bad about what she did to Charlie. That shes battling a problem with her self with guilt of ruining Charlies life.

External conflict is a character vs. an outside force. The external conflict of Dr. Strauss is Dr. Strauss vs. Dr. Nemur. From the story, "Flowers for Algernon" it says, "Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur don't seem to be getting along so well. They're arguing all the time. Dr. Nemur was saying it was his experiment and his research, and Dr. Strauss was shouting back that he contributed just as much..." (Keyes 104). This evidence supports that they both came together to work on the experiment, and they wouldn't have been able to accomplish what they had done without each other.

An example of an external conflict with Charlie would be when Joe Carp and Frank Riley invited Charlie to go to Muggsy's Saloon to go get some drinks. Charlie didn't realize that they invited him to make fun of him. According to the text, "Joe Carp said I should show the girls how I mop out the toilet in the factory and he got me a mop. I showed them and everyone laffed when I told that Mr Donnegan said I was the best janiter he ever had..." (Keyes 94). Charlie didn't understand he was made fun of until the operation was done, and he was beginning to get smarter.

An example static character in the story is Dr. Nemur. He doesn't change throughout the story at all. In the story it states, "Dr. Nemur was more interested in the chair of psychology at Princeton, then he was in the experiment" (Keyes 104). It also says that, "I believe that Dr. Nemur was afraid of further delay because he worried that someone else might make a discovery along these lines and take the credit from him" (Keyes 109). This shows that he only cared about fame and money. Not Charlie or the experiment. In conclusion, this is how Dr. Nemur is a static character in the story "Flowers for Algernon" .

An allusion found in the book, "Flowers For Algernon" is a book called, Robinson Crusoe. This is shown by the author writing, "We are reading a very hard book. It's called Robinson Crusoe about a man who gets merooned on on a desert island." ( Keyes 96.) The book Robinson Crusoe, is an allusion because it is a real book that was published on April 25, 1719, by Daniel Defoe. The author chose to use this book as the a llusion because the characters in both stories deal with some kind of mental disability.

A major theme in ''Flowers For Algernon'' is that you shouldn't change yourself

in a way that is unnatural, such as how Charlie began doing tests to get smarter. As stated in the text, "Them changes. I don't know you used to be a good, dependable, ordinary man-not too bright maybe, but honest. Who knows what you done to yourself to get so smart all of sudden'' Fanny said. ''They've driven me you of the factory, and now i'm more alone than ever before" (Keyes 107). Fanny is saying that the way Charlie became intelligent was wrong and should have been done differently.

Caroline and Greg - Symbolism

Symbolism is a literary device that has a deeper meaning than its literal meaning. The symbolism in "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes is the flowers on Algernon's grave. The flowers represent the time in Charlie's life when he was very intelligent. The text states, "P.P.S. Please if you get a chance put some flowers on Algernon's grave in the bak yard..." ( Keyes 124). This evidence supports the idea that the flowers represent Charlie's intelligence because Algernon represented the "Algernon- Gordon Effect", which granted Charlie his knowledge. Therefore, telling Miss Kinnian and Dr. Strauss to put flowers on Algernon's grave is a way of telling them to remember the old smarter Charlie.

In "Flowers For Algernon" the text structure is Chronological order. The reason why is because it has progress reports that go along with story. As stated in the text," Progress Report 12, April 30."(Keyes 106) The author shows us that Charlie progresses in the story. Charlie writes about his day and it shows how his writing skills, learning and speech improve in time. He put in the date for every day in chronological order (time order) and it helps see when and how he improves.

The internal conflict in the story, "Flowers for Algernon," is when Charlie Gordon started his regression, and is not doing very well. In the story, Charlie said, "...I realized I could no longer read German. I tested myself in other languages. All gone" (Keyes 119). This shows that Charlie is losing his intelligence and forgetting the languages he learned when he was more intelligent. Now, Charlie does not know much because of his regression. Since he knows he is regressing, Charlie feels bad.

The story "Flowers for Algernon" is written in first person point of view. First person point of view is how we learn the story through the narrator's eyes only. First person point of view helps us understand the story better because we get to know how Charlie feels about the experiment. As Charlie states in the text, "I don't think I passed the raw shok test (Keyes 83). This shows that this story is in first person. Another example is when Charlie states, " Then I said let me see that card agen I bet I'll find it now."
