This book takes place in 1944 in Poland when Germany and Adolf Hitler were trying to take over the world. Everywhere in the world at this time was in war with Hitler or was about to be or just got out of it. D-day also took place in 1944. Hitler went into hiding in his bunker. It was concluded after he was never seen again he ended up committing suicide.

The historical context of this book showed me the intensity of Hitler. This really deepened my understanding by describing how much Poland was effected along with the rest of the world. At the end the book it tells how some other places got it worse than Poland. This really shows you how good it is to live in America where we are far away from the middle east and all the places that are in constant war. The book really does good at showing how powerful one army can be.

This picture really shows all the damages done. The dangers of buildings collapsing when you are in them.

This connects to the book because, almost the entire book they were running from bombs. Also there were a couple times were Aunt Hannah and all of that group were blowing buildings up and doing all of that stuff.

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/article/75-years-after-world-war-ii-their-voices-recall-the-struggle-feature

The theme woven through out this book was Hitler and his strong army. In the book Hitler and his army were mentioned frequently. They were described unstoppable. This picture really reminds me of the theme because as we see here Hitler is just looking at his army knowing he is unstoppable.

https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/adolf-hitler

The main theme of the book is about the German army and difficult to escape they were. The text states, "Hitler started a terrible war. He sent his army to invade countries all over Europe," (Tarshis,13).This relates to the theme because it tells us how much he impacted everything and everyone. It also tells us that it was very hard to control him considering how many countries he took over.
