This will set MLL students up for success when tackling new language and content. I will best support MLLs in content and language learning by differentiating for MLLs at different WIDA levels and responding to MLLs’ individual literacy needs. According to WIDA, “An important feature in the WIDA standards framework is an explicit connection to state content standards” (WIDA, 2013, pg.4). This is incredibly important to my education philosophy when working with MLLs as I am highly focused on supporting MLLs in language and content learning. According to Levine and McCloskey (2012), “In integrated approaches, meaning is central, and teachers work to integrate top-down and bottom-up approaches” (pg.173). By implementing an integrated approach with MLLs, I can focus on MLLs’ needs such as “…instruction in which oral language development, literacy development, and content learning all support one another” (Levine & McCloskey, 2012, pg.176).
