Beginning vs. Ending

Coraline begins with a creepy opening sequence where her doll is created by an unknown person in a dark room with childishly scary music, whereas Alice in Wonderland opens with beautiful landscapes and cinematic music. It shows the contrast between the two styles of the movies, with Coraline being an exploration of the creepy things in life while Alice explores the beautiful and imaginative things. Coraline ends with an eerily happy ending where the residents all celebrate in the garden while Alice ends with her mother waking her up to disrupt the horrors Wonderland forced her into. They both have satisfying and pleasant conclusions.

Hidden themes are common in the otherworldly adventure.
Comedy, horror, entertainment, delicacies, all the attractions are meant to draw in prey and hunt on kids who want to improve their life. Each otherworldly character, attraction, or feature appeals to Coraline's senses. The imagination factor runs wild. The main message of the story is to be careful about what you wish for. Coraline has conflicts with her parents and disobeys them, whilst trying to cross back into the ordinary world, she fights the other mother to win back her true parents. In the resolve, she makes amends to accept others, be grateful, and that love is more than physical things. Love is intangible.

Symbols

Symbols are shown throughout both stories as they can either be obvious or discreet. A symbol displayed throughout Coraline was the buttoned eyes. The buttoned eyes represented a family which seemed perfect, however was deceiving and only wished harm upon Coraline's actual family. While in the story Alice in Wonderland all of the animals have some sort of deeper meaning throughout the phases of the story. For example the white rabbit symbolizes time while the Cheshire Cat is helping Alice with her path, therefore being her guidance throughout the story.

The animals in Coraline consist mostly of the cat being weird and suspicious until he's revealed to be intelligent and able to talk. He helps Coraline overcome her fear of the new mother and assists her character arc in realizing that imperfect parents are the best ones to have. Alice in Wonderland, however, portrays most animals as weirdly cheerful and silly, and they all have something sort of knowledge they share to help her along her journey.

I can sympathize with Coraline's character arc and decisions throughout the story because I also understand the frustrations of a child feeling neglected and misunderstood by his/her parents. The childish innocence and sense of fun Coraline experienced was something I went through as well and I also grew up eventually, both physically and mentally.

I connect to Coraline's life sometimes as my parents are both very hard working and have a lot of responsibilities on their hands. Sometimes I as well take what they do for granted and don't fully appreciate everything they are doing for me. I think both Caroline and I need to understand the struggles of adults more and the division of time they have to face and go trough.

The structure of the movie was made into a thriller. I really liked how Coraline had major character development towards the end. She was courageous and showed good morals by finding the lost kids missing eyes. I can relate because, in my family and group of friends, no man is left behind. Or we must do charitable works for others who have endured suffering. Especially during this lenten season for my faith it is crucial that I live a life of sacrifice.
