Fluency refers to the pace at which student's read as well as the tone and expression they read with. It requires a student to read text with speed and accuracy. Fluency is a critical component of reading comprehension, however, it is often a neglected skill within the classroom.

Wolf by Becky Bloom is a good story to read aloud to the class when trying to improve their reading fluency. The main character of the story is a wolf who enrolls in school after seeing a group of barnyard animals reading books. The wolf decided that he wanted to learn not only how to read, but how to read fluently. The wolf goes to the library every day to practice reading. At first he reads too fast and too slow, but by the end he is able to impress the animals with his ability to read. This is a good way to introduce students to the concept of reading fluency.

QuickVoice is a free app available in the iTunes store that can be used on either an iPhone or iPad. This app can be helpful when correcting reading fluency because students can record themselves reading passages and then review them to self-evaluate their abilities. The student can also email the recordings to the teacher for them to view and evaluate at their own convenience. On the left are instructions found online for using the app.
