Background:
- Rebecca is 8 years old
- Birthday: 08/25/2009
- Grade: Third

Rebecca was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) when she was in Second grade. In Second grade her teacher noticed that she was having a hard time fitting in with the other students and that she showed very repetitive behaviors. Her parents got divorced when she was just five years old and she currently lives with her mother.

She always is the top of her class in math and science but struggles when it comes to subjects like art and music. Rebecca is very passionate about butterflies and will often time talk about them for an extended period of time, and will not stop unless someone tells her to. She also shows no interest when her other peers are talking. Because of these things she has trouble making friends or making any kind of social interaction. Some of Rebecca's personality traits is that she is persistent, determined, adventurous, alert, and independent.

Teacher - Student Connections:
1. I will create jobs for everyone in the classroom but I will have Rebecca be my teacher's helper. For this job, I will have her do things such as staple papers together, copy worksheets, and go next door if I need anything from my co-teacher. This will make Rebecca feel like she is important because it requires enough interaction but not too much where she will be outside of her comfort zone.

2. One of the most important things with a student who has a disability or disorder of any kind is to make the child know you are there for them. In order for Rebecca to know I am there for her, I will create a box that I will have on or near my desk. When she feels upset, happy, sad, or just needs to talk about something that's going on she will be able to do so by leaving me a note in my box. I will check this box twice a day. Once during my plan period and another time before the school day is over.

Student - Student Connections:
1. In my classroom, I will have stations when it comes to different subjects such as math, reading, and writing. Stations are different areas around the room that are set up for the groups of children to take turns going to. For these stations, I will draw the student's names out of a cup. Every station they participate in I will draw their names again because I think it is good for Rebecca to interact with as many students as possible instead of just a few she might already be comfortable with.

2. I will use “icebreakers” and other “get to know each other” strategies to counteract some of the social detachment felt in a child with Autism. When these strategies are used in a classroom, not just at the beginning, it will help increase the amount of social interaction between the students and Rebecca. It is important to do activities like these all year round because talking to your peers should be an enjoyable part of their environment.

Motivation Strategies for Learning and Promoting Positive Behavior

1. One common strategy that I've seen in many classrooms has been rewarding the student with some kind of ticket. For my class, I will have golden tickets and they will be rewarded with them anytime they do something good. For example, I will give Rebecca a golden ticket when I notice her holding a conversation with a classmate, or when she makes good eye contact when she says something encouraging to a classmate or to myself. On Fridays, Rebecca will turn all of her golden tickets in and she will get to get on an iPad and play her choice of butterfly games from http://www.primarygames.com/science/butterflies/games.htm.

2. Another way I will promote positive behavior is by having a chart on Rebecca's desk. Every time I notice her doing something good while at school I will let her know she can fill in another box on her chart. When the chart is full she can pick a prize out of my chest full of surprises. I will encourage all of her specials teachers to let me know if she does something good in their classes that way we can keep track of her progress, not only in my classroom.

3. At the end of each day, we will gather and evaluate the day. If she had a good day she will receive a smile, if it was a bad day she will receive a sad face. She will hang on to these faces during the week and at the end of the week if she has had at least 5 good days she will get to do guided research on butterflies, which is what she is most passionate about.

Teaching and Assessment Methods

Math
Teaching Method: Everyday in math, we will do centers. Some centers would include things such as multiplication flash cards. Another would include whiteboards and they would have to draw their numbers from 1 to 100 by 5's. Another would include a game having to do with shapes. During these math centers, I will make sure that the classroom's voice level does not get too high otherwise Rebecca will get frazzled and will not be able to focus. I also will have lots of visuals hanging around the classroom for Rebecca to look off of if she needs a little extra help with something. For example, there will be a poster of the numbers 1 through 200, and there will also be shapes hanging around the room so she always can refer to them.

Assessment Method: Every child is required by their school to take timed tests having to do with math. Because Rebecca is sensitive to loud noises I will take her out in the hallway when I go to do her testing. I will make sure a para is in the classroom with the rest of the kids while I'm out in the hall with Rebecca. By having her go out in the hall to take these timed tests I believe that she will perform better because the hall will be a lot quieter than the classroom would be.

Reading and Writing
Teaching Method: On Friday's we will do this thing called Flashlight Friday. This is designed to make free time reading more enjoyable for the kids because they have something to look forward to and this works well in Rebecca's favor. Rebecca is sensitive to bright lights so any chance we get we will have the lights dimmed but on Friday's when Rebecca has free time she is allowed to grab a flashlight and sit and read to herself independently. The whole class will participate in this and I think that is good for the class because it promotes classroom unity. Rebecca will get to do this whenever she is finished with her work that was assigned before the rest of the class is ready to move on.

Assessment Method: Because Rebecca is so passionate about butterflies she has a hard time reading about things that don't have to do with butterflies. I will have an open-ended/multiple choice worksheet for Rebecca to fill out when she gets through with a new book to make sure she is actually reading and comprehending the material that isn't about butterflies. Reading fluency tests are also required in the classroom so I will make sure that when she has to read to me that is she is where she should be.

Science
Teaching Method: Science is Rebecca's favorite subject so I won't have to make too many modifications but one thing that I will implement in my class is letting the kids talk to the class. Rebecca is passionate about science and knows a lot about many different things in that subject so when we get the chance I will let her talk about things such as butterflies or different insects. Often times when Rebecca gets talking about science she will talk about it for a long time but you have to know when to stop her because the other students will not be very engaged. Another teaching method is to let Rebecca present a project about butterflies to the class. Not only will Rebecca love this but it will get the whole class involved.

Assessment Method: One assessment method I will use with Rebecca is verbal tests. Holding conversations with people is hard for Rebecca so I think that by giving her these verbal tests it will show her that I'm interested in what she has to say but while testing her knowledge about the material.
