Chanie Wenjack’s story deeply affected me and helped me realize that residential schools were not just government policies, but systems that caused real human suffering. This class showed me that reconciliation is not only about the past, but about changing systems that still affect Indigenous peoples today.

Something new I learned was section 35 of The 1982 Constitution Act. I was aware of The Constitution Act was the full independence from Britain, but I did not realize within this act it also recognizes and affirms the rights of Indigenous people. It is sad to think about how 1982 wasn't that long ago, meaning the treaty's were not recognized until then.

is that this is an ongoing issue that has taken far too long to resolve. I understand that developing new policies and moving the political process forward takes time, but let’s be honest, there are still northern communities without access to clean, running water and struggling to meet basic living needs because of their remote locations. Yet resources continue to be directed elsewhere, while the people who were here first are still being overlooked.

-LT

The fact that one of the first schools was established around 1620 shocked me. To put things into perspective, the "Shakespearean era" occurred in history approximately around the times of 1590 to 1613 and onwards to 1625 placing this era overlapped with the early years of colonization and assimilation of The First Nations. Another note worthy point made in the lecture was referencing Egerton Ryerson and his impacts (within the timeline slide). Egerton Ryerson was the founder of "Ryerson University". Due to his corrupt political and bigoted views, his monument statue was removed, and "Ryerson University" was christened a new name, "Toronto Metropolitan University".
