Our goal is to create a method whereby any chess player that is part of the lichess.org community can compare their own statistics to those of any other player in the community. We will explore different methods of displaying the comparison. Currently, lichess.org provides in-depth statistics to individual users (e.g. number of mistakes and moves per piece, winning record based on colour, opening move, etc.), but the only method of comparing users is by their overall Elo ranking. We want to allow players to search for others’ usernames and graph their statistics against the players’ own. Our target audience is existing users of the site. Ideally, we would be able to integrate this feature into the site itself. If that is not an option, we would develop it as a separate web app.

Harbir is struggling to increase their chess rating on Lichess.org. They decide to use our data visualization to help with their chess studies. They notice that they tend to lose when playing black against a D4 opening, so they decide to study a defensive line against that and see their rating begin to increase because of it.

Jordan has decided to hire a coach to help analyze their games to help them get better at chess. Instead of having the coach watch and analyze multiple games to find Jordan’s weaknesses, they are able to view the data visualization to find these weaknesses faster. (Could also be used to help players find coaches who will be better suited to help them, a coach who excels in the area in which the player is struggling)

Ricky is a high level player who is facing off against a stranger online. Ricky decides to look up the data visualization of his opponent's profile to see their weak points in order to play against it. (This could be seen as cheating since it gives a competitive advantage to one player, so we as developers may have to implement a forced login and only allow someone to see their own data relative to everyone).

Auston is very competitive and enjoys playing primarily to win. He is willing to use all available tools to both improve his own skills and capitalize on opponents' weaknesses. To appeal to Auston, the comparison tools should be thorough and available before, during, and after a match.

Zach is an analytical person who finds data and statistics highly interesting. To appeal to Zach, our interface should display information in a visually appealing way that's easy to understand.

Mitch plays chess casually and isn't overly concerned with winning or the minute details of the game. To appeal to Mitch, access to the comparison features should be unobtrusive and not interfere with the game itself.
