I believe that teenagers nowadays are quite disrespectful towards the elderly or even their own parents as I myself have witness some disrespectful acts by teenagers towards their parents. They would either ignore what their parents are saying or argue and shout back at their parents which I think it is very wrong and very sad to see these kind of acts in public or even in a reality TV show. I think this has to stop as we should love and care for our parents and elderly. They have taken good care of us since we were young, therefore we should repay them with some basic respect and love towards them. But I also believe that there are some teenagers who are respectful and caring towards to their parents and the elderly.

Good morning mr Loh, vice principals, teachers and fellow commonwealthians. I am Regina Wong from class 4S and i am here to present about how teenagers treat the elderly nowadays.

I think teenagers nowadays are both respectful and disrespectful. I often saw students helping elderly on the street when they need help or facing difficulties and some of us are brought up by our grandparents so we really respect them and feel thankful towards them but some ungrateful and disrespectful people mistreat the elderly by scolding them, talking to them back or even hitting them. I saw quite a few videos online of children hitting their mom or even grandparents who are already quite old. This is obviously wrong and super disrespectful, anybody who do this is a disgrace to the society. We must understand that most elderly do nag a lot or might be unreasonable sometimes but I still thinks that all of us should at least give the elderly the basic respect which they deserve.

Teacher's comments: It's always sad to witness such incidents or to always see videos and pictures of such things on television or in the newspapers. Quite a meaningful sharing, Regina.

But when someone who is older than you is talking to you politely, the least respect you can give is do not argue back to them if you do that then this is called disrespectful act.

But there are some teenagers are respectful to others around them by helping elderly whenever they need help. This are acts of respectful people who are not shy to help others in public.

Teacher's comments: I think that we ought to be polite in speech at all times, don't you agree, Asvini?

Showing respects towards elderly

I think it is crucial thing for us to show basic respects as to lessen the burden of other people needs.

I profess that not all the teenagers nowadays are disrespectful towards elderly or younger people. From what i see, I can say that most of the teenagers out there still also do their part in caring for the society including the elderlies. For example, doing a simple job like helping elderly cross a road or helping them carry heavy stuff such as groceries. This action can be the most influential, as people will idolize such personalities. I also do encounter people from other country helping us pick up litter from the floor and I do admire their such behavior. Therefore, I think there is no excuses for our people to not be respectful towards culture, tradition and authority. I believe that students can do their part in being more observant for the poor, the elderly and handicapped so that to realize the importance of caring for the society. Hence, I think The basic thing we can do is to show empathy towards people.

Through this, we can start to show basic respects. And I hope more people out there will start to show in caring for the community.

Written by: Cathy

Date: 25/07/2015

Good observation Cathy. No action is too small or simple if it helps lessen the burden of another. Sometimes, we feel that our action is insignificant hence not worth doing at all. I also agree that teenagers need to be more observant. Instead of just looking down at our phones or being too engrossed in our thoughts, we should look around us and be more aware of our surroundings.

Students can also pair up organisation to help clean houses of the elderly. Students can also help by when they are taking public transport and is during peak hours or is not but they spot an elderly person they can stand up and give up their sits to them. Students can also help when they spot any elderly on the road who need a help they can offer a hand and help them example crossing the road or by helping helping carrying their stuffs if is too many or heavy for them to manage.

Written by: Enzo

Date: 24/07/2015

I feel that they have been brought up wrongly and that only a handful of of them have proper mannerisms. Unlike them, in my opinion I find that the 1990-1999 have strict bringing up or at least some level of respect to their elders. But, however they may be some delinquents among our generation and I think they should not be segregated from us or judged separately because of this.

Good morning Mr Loh,vice principal, teachers and fellow commonwealthian. I am Ryan Izwan from class 4S here by sharing a speech about yours now a days. I think that youths now a days actually do care about the elderly. That is because, some of the youths actually willing to sacrifice their time and to participate in involving themself with the work fare society. Before they start the community work, they went to the public raise to funds for the folks. They help to entertain the folks with playing some board games, helping out with the household chores, help them go through physio therapy or even have a meal together. To end day, they donate some amount of small cash or extra household needs and sang some songs together with them. With that, I would like to thank all of you who are present and spending your time with me. Thank you.

Teacher's Comment: Great that you observed the positives instead of just looking at the negatives. What do you think are some challenges faced by our youths today that is stopping them from contributing?

I think syudentcan help the elderly by visiting the old folks home to show the elderly how to keep their hand clean. Examples like, wash their hand after using the bathroom, coughing or sneezing, wiping nose and touching common surfaces like handles or table tops. This steps are very useful to them because they can keep themselves clean and tidy and prevent bacteria and germs from their body. For that, I would like to thank all of you to accompany my speech presentation. Thank you.

However, people in their adolescents these days take things for granted, living a profligate life they forget simple things their parents taught them such as manners, kindness how to respect people etc etc

I myself have helped an old uncle pick up his phone after he dropped it, he couldn't even bend down to reach it so i helped him to pick it up. But while i was picking it up, i accidentally scraped his phone's screen on the floor. Some teenagers also dislike the elderly because of they way they talk to people on their phones. During their generation, they had no handphones or smartphones, so they are not used to todays technology. I hope you have learnt something from my speech, thank you for listening.

Doing this also have benefits by watching the poor smile because we're doing a favour for them. Even though your donation maybe small, it might mean alot to them. You can donate toys for the children and books for them too. The clothes keeps them warm and clean. So we should donate to the less fortunate. You will feel great about donating and its fun.

Teacher's comments: You are so so right, Akib.

I think that students should help the poor, elderly or the handicap because nowadays, i can see many elderly or handicap people struggling as the elderly people had gotten old and for the handicap people, sometimes they find it hard to travel to places they want to go as they are may not be very efficient as they have to seat on a wheelchair. I think that we could help them by helping the elderly people to carry their groceries as they may not have enough strength as they had turn old and for the handicap people, we could help them by hosting a special event which could bring them to places that they want to go.For those people who have financial problem, i think that there would be places in Singapore where they could go and get help from so that they would starve to death or could not find a place to stay.

One of the examples of the disrespectful teenagers is when they see the elderly carrying heavy groceries and they intend to ignore and just continue minding their own business and play with their handphones. But some of the teenagers intend to help the elderly by going to the Old Folks home and take care of the elderly. You can also bond with the elderly by doing simple things such as doing paper origami. Creating a bond with the elderly makes them feel happy as they feel more care and loved

The students could sell hand made items such as friendship bracelet or a badge and also food and beverages like cupcakes and smoothies during their recess time or they could also donate clothes that are still wearable too. We could also give out flyers to the residents near our school to provide social awareness towards the elderlys and the handicapped. To me, even the slightest help could possibly make a huge difference in their life. Thank you for taking your time to listen and I hope that our school would conduct a small charity.

I observe that rather than giving up seats to the elderly, they tend to pretend that they are sleeping or even listening to loud music when they are on bus or train. As for parents, instead of obeying, most of them tend to talk back to their parents because usually they find them annoying whenever their parents are nagging at them. They actually do not appreciate how bless they are about having their parents showering them with love and care every single day whenever they need them and yet, even complaining about their parents not giving the things they want.
