I could be whipped." it shows that she didn't originally think through her choices and she ignored the repercussions and jeopardized her future.

She could have prevented her departure to Europe if she hadn't been so rebellious. Also if she had a stronger connection to her mother, instead of being difficult and inconsiderate, her parents may have gone with her despite the financial situation. "I sealed my act of rebellion against my mothers dictatorship by smoking the cigarette I'd stolen" This quote shows that Marji is a very rebellious child who does not think through her choices. She ignored the repercussions of her actions once again and changed her future.

My own cultural experiences have shaped how I perceive the book because growing up a Christian I didn’t know anything about the veil. I didn’t understand why people of the same religion were fighting over what religious symbols they wore. Growing up in the United States we have had the freedom of religion, so when Marji got expelled for not wearing the veil and behaving inappropriately it surprised me. In the United States education is arguably the most important thing, so for Marji to be expelled from school over something that I thought was not inappropriate shocked me.
