Who is shown? Soldiers in Petersburg, VA
When was the image taken? 1864
What you believe is happening in this image? Just based of looking at the photo, it seems like the soldiers are taking a break and socializing with one another. The website states that this image shows soldiers just after finishing a drill, "Reading letters, and papers, and playing cards" while resting.
How this image relates to what we have learned about the lives of Civil War soldiers? (Lectures & Documents) In the first lecture in Unit 2, it discusses what soldiers went through on a daily basis during the war. It highlights how sending letters and reading letters from family members were essential to these mens lives. In the Primary documents from Unit 2, they are all letters written by civil war soldiers to their mothers, fathers, and wives. In the letters, the soldiers discuss life at war, what their duties for the day consisted of, how many men were killed that day, how food was scarce, and so on. Form all of these documents, it seemed that the letters the soldiers received from home gave them hope and something to look forward to. And the letters the soldiers sent gave them the chance to talk about their feelings and any of their fears, which allowed them to release some of the stress they had.

To keep busy and distracted from what was happening around them, it made sense that the soldiers found distraction through writing and reading letters and from talking with others soldiers. I believe this was essential to their lives because it gave them a source of solace.

As you can see this black family is traveling by horse with others as they enter the Union. This relates to the civil war because black people started to be the settlement of the war. " those who were on the Union side would remain free, and those in bondage were to work 3 days for their masters and three for themselves." (Reading americans past pg 296). The war for the slaves was not easy they didn't receive pay for 18 months, and then they wanted to give them half pay. Even if they were on the union side life was still difficult for them and they were still really scared what could happen to them.

reply to Sabrina: I think that it is not fair that we can see how tough it was to be in the Civil war but these men got paid and different have to endure the struggles of a black man being in the war. It was once again hard for anyone to be in the war, but harder for a black man because their families didn't have much especially when they were not getting paid. " I remember hearing Captain Heasley telling his company one day "Boys, stand up for your full pay! I am with you, and so are all the officers." This is even the captain being on their side to get a pay. I really enjoyed your post as well!

Who is Shown?
Allan Pinkerton, chief of the secret service, with his men in Cumberland Landing, Virginia (May 14, 1862).
What is Happening?
The soldiers letters from the primary document lead me to believe that these soldiers are waiting for instruction from Pinkerton. The man with the pipe is pinkerton. The soldiers letters suggest that these men are awaiting instruction from Pinkerton. Many of the soldiers letters seemed to suggest quite a bit of waiting and uncertainty. This image seems to depict soldiers awaiting their next move as Pickering looks on.
How this image depicts what we have learned?
Through reading the primary documents and reading the American Ywap, I learned that the war was quite uncertain. Robert W. Christie wrote, "... I think we will not stay long some of the officers say we will leave this week but they do not know any more than I do."

Both the Union and the Confederacy were going back and forth when it came down to land and victories. I believe this photograph represents the lives of soldiers and the Civil War well. The soldiers wrote of uncertainty, while the fate of the war was uncertain. Even at the end of the Civil War their were many unanswered questions. This image shows that even though it was the bloodiest American War in history, there were many times where both sides sat and awaited their next move, unsure of what the United States would look like at the end of the war.

Post 2: Sabrina Esmail
I agree. I believe you are right when you say the soldiers are on some sort of break. I believe what pictures like this one help to show us, is that war was not always action packed. There are times of boredom and times in which soldiers simply had to await their armies next move.

William Henry Harrison wrote home and said "our Cournel he bet ahondard dollars that the wor woode stop in thirty days. I wish hit was

over now for iam tierde astayen here in the sirvise." These dull moments and pleas for the war to end show that not only did the war last longer than expected, but soldiers on both sides were tired of these moments awaiting their next move. To fill this time they wrote letters, read papers, and danced.

Who is shown:
Confederate prisoners captured in the Shenandoah Valley being guarded in a Union camp

When was the image taken:
May 1862

What you believe is happening in this image:
As we know, the Civil War was very important for both parties, Confederacy and Union. Certainly, it was an internal war, that is a war between Southerners and Northerners. Each group had its own army with many soldiers. In fact, the image has shown me a camp that was set up by the Union army to put the Confederate soldiers in prison. People in the image are confederate soldiers captured by the Union soldiers. Also, there are guards who are keeping an eye on the prisoners.

How this image relates to what we have learned about the lives of Civil War soldiers:
The Civil War was the result of so many issues, problems that existed in the United States right after the Independence. On the other hand, there were conflicts. Certainly, the country was facing the pressure of the slavery; Americans were divided into many groups, and each group had an opinion about the slavery. The Southerners did not accept any idea of slaves emancipation. However, the Northerners had a different approach of slavery; they thought slavery was against the law of humanity. This what the American Yawp said about the War " The vast majority of northerners went to war to preserve the Union, but the war ultimately transformed into a struggle to eradicate slavery. African Americans, both enslaved and free pressed the issue of emancipation and nurtured this transformation.
