In the book, Gurta had a lot of courage steeling a pully. Frits had a lot of courage because he stood up to a soldier. When the soldier found the tunnel Gurta had a lot of courage by grabbing his arm and speaking up to him. Mowzer had courage by agreeing to try and escape with them. Anna had a bad type of courage because she was spying on Gurta. Their mom had courage because she left her kids alone to go take care of her mom. Another theme is family and being together because no one would be able to survive without their family. Gurta and Fritz would not be able to build their tunnel without each other or get the housework done. If their grandmother didn’t have their mom she wouldn’t be able to get anything done because she has a broken leg.

The reason I think it is sacrifice is because Gurta sacrifices her life to get out through the tunnel. Fritz sacrifices himself for Gurta. Their Dad also sacrifices his life to try to save them. I also think it’s for family because Gurta and Fritz don’t tell their Mom anything so she doesn’t stress any more. Anna also isn’t talking to Gurta because of her family’s safety. Survival is a theme because Gerta has to survive a life with a wall right next to her house and she can’t cross it, she has no freedom, and her dad and brother went to the other side of the wall to check it out and so right now she has no brother or dad. Family is another theme because it mentions a lot about family and how she struggles with her family and family is a really important part in a girls life. More about my book is that I think Gerta is a really strong girl and she does really well through the struggles she faces. One other thing is that she doesn’t really have that much to eat because she basically can’t go to the grocery store because of the guards won’t let anyone go anywhere ( except kids going to school). I would probably would survive in her life but I would not live a life that I would want to live. I wouldn’t have a brother or father and barely any food.
