There was a statement in our group about how we often work in silos across campus and how centralized advising can make it difficult for faculty to connect directly with students about courses. That resonated with me because often advisors in our center share courses with students based on what appears in the bulletin description, which doesn’t always capture the real purpose or energy behind the course. I wonder if we might create a syllabus template that includes components such as:

An Instructor Greeting – a short paragraph where the instructor shares who they are, why they enjoy teaching the course, and what excites them about the topic. This personal connection helps students see the human side of learning and can even spark interest in taking the class.

A College-to-Career Skills Section – since we’re talking about “hacking college” and focusing on college-to-career readiness, why not make those connections explicit? Just like we’re required to list objectives and learning outcomes, we could also list 3–5 transferable skills students will develop (e.g., time management, collaboration, analytical thinking).

These small additions could make syllabi more engaging and informative, not just for students, but also for advisors who help students choose courses. I’d love to hear what other components people think could be added to a syllabus to make it more student-centered and career-relevant.

Programs with a capstone or internship course are great spaces to integrate reflective, career-oriented activities, connecting coursework to real-world skills, writing accomplishment statements, or analyzing job descriptions in the field.

It can also be powerful when faculty and students attend career fairs together, helping both understand employer priorities and how coursework aligns with industry needs.

Some programs are even piloting AI-embedded internships, where students work with faculty mentors to apply AI tools within a company project. This not only gives students cutting-edge experience but also helps employers see the value of partnering with higher education in new ways.

Finally, alumni panels or class visits are simple but effective ways to help students visualize how graduates are applying their majors beyond college.
